We adopted our wonderful new ball python, Lucy/Mango, from CHS earlier this month and the process was amazing. The staff were all so friendly and made the adoption process such an enjoyable, smooth experience. It is obvious how much the shelter staff and volunteers love the animals in their care, and the expertise and care that the staff have when going through the adoption process and finding the perfect home for the animals is unmatched.

The facility itself is very welcoming and clean, the animals are all clearly well cared for, and again the faculty and volunteers are just lovely.

Lucy/Mango is doing amazing and has been such an incredible addition to the family. Thank you again CHS!

I want to start off first, by saying how loving, compassionate, caring this organization is and I have nothing absolutely nothing bad to say about what they stand for and what they do as an organization we need organizations like this many more that are willing to love and help animals

Very unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for me, for I had in the early morning arrived to my shop to do my regular, day-to-day life, as I got there, I noticed a bird sitting on my dumpster bin lid, shaking and soaking wet, I dropped every single thing I was doing to ensure that this bird made it. The emotion and the bond that I created rescuing this animal, while it fell sleep, shaking on my shoulders, happy that it was in a warm, safe environment, immediately I wanted to make sure that this bird was reunited with its loved ones and family. That was my only priority, so I delivered it to this organization and upon filling out the paperwork I very clearly, and specifically asked to be put at the top of the list for adoption, I bonded with a bird that I rescued it only seems fair, right? well unfortunately the individual that was working that day decided not to put that in the file, so when I left, I went about my night thinking there’s gonna be two options. I have either rescued a bird and was able to reunite it with his family or I was going to become that rescue Bird’s new family, and to take care of it, and to love it as if it was my own. And I really hate to say it, but this organization stripped me of that feeling and stripped me of any emotion that I had toward that bird.

two weeks went by with anticipation and hoping it was reunited so when I called them and left them a voicemail. They got back to me and told me that the bird was going to a foster family, and that the foster family was going to receive first choice of whether or not they wanted to adopt the bird, I questioned the individual on the phone and explain to her that I had asked to be put on the adoption list, they detailed that there was no record of me requesting that on file even though I have two other eyewitnesses there.

A day later they had called me back and told me that they had adopted out the bird to another person, you can understand my confusion when I was under the impression that I had rescued this bird that had saved this bird, and I had bonded with this bird that I had deserve the right to welcome that bird to my family . Because this organization had a wildly massive mess up and did not record my specific requests to be the adopted father, you took away what most people look at in that in the organization as a dream that would never come true, to rescue an animal to be able to call it your family. They took that from me and what I’m feeling is biblical I have no other choice but to express and communicate exactly how I feel.

I expressed my concern and confusion over a voicemail as to which, then the manager called me the next day, and was extremely apologetic and attentive, which to say they never weren’t. They were always great to talk with and great individuals to work with. I have to reiterate that I am not Insulting the integrity of what they do or how they do it this was just one really really unfortunate mess up on their end that needs to be made aware of

I recently adopted a 3-month-old kitten named Scruffy from this wonderful shelter. He’s super affectionate, playful, and has completely won over our whole family!
If you’re thinking about adopting a kitten, I highly recommend visiting the shelter often—when you find the right one, don’t hesitate to bring them home! Scruffy had just been neutered when I first saw him (his name wasn’t even on the website yet!), and I took him home the very next day.
The staff at the shelter were so kind, patient, and caring. The facility was clean and well-run, and they helped me find the perfect match. I hope you can find your ideal furry friend there too!

We saw Zena a five your old Sheppard cross on tv on Monday and immediately went to see her at the shelter. She was an amazing dog. Very loving and cuddly, played fetch like a champ. We had gotten another dog from the shelter, Murphy, just a little over two years ago and he is now a family member. Amazing dog and Zena would be a good buddy for him. Unfortunately we have to leave in a couple of weeks for Europe for two weeks, so the timing isn’t quite right for us. But if she is still there when we return, I can’t promise that she won’t be coming home with us. I really hope this sweet girl finds a forever home. She is primarily an outdoor dog, used to out door acerage life. She is just amazing, and any family that adopts her will be amazed at what a wonderful girl she is. Attached are pictures of Murphy the fella we took home two years ago. He just needs a buddy to share his experiences with. And Zena may just be the perfect fit for him.

I have adopted my beautiful cat «Hattie» from this wonderful shelter (Calgary Humane Society) 2 weeks ago. They have the most professional and friendliest staff and volunteers, and overall the place is great& so welcoming! The receptionists are the loveliest too and extremely helpful. As well many great thanks to Sawyer for making the adoption process so smooth, quick, clear and was so supportive till it was the time to take my cat home. This is the best experience I have ever had, and I warmly recommend this place to everyone who is considering adopting a pet. One of the greatest things in this place is that you can meet and greet all the pets and spend time with them anytime during the week even on weekends before choosing to adopt, this makes it less stressful to the animals and to us before taking any home forever. Good luck always and keep the great job!

We adopted a cat from Meow foundation in November and the entire experience was great. They accommodated a meet and greet with the cat we were interested in the same day as our phone interview. They gave us plenty of time to visit with him and make our decision. We ended up with the perfect addition to our family.

I had an amazing experience adopting a cat through Meow Foundation. The cat who chose me was originally named Unique, and I wanted to share an update on her.

These days, she goes by Lucy—though we also call her Lu, Lulu, Lucille, and occasionally Lucifer. She’s turning 16 this year and was diagnosed with diabetes about three years ago, but she takes her daily insulin injections like a champ.

Lucy has been by my side through both the most difficult and most incredible moments of my life, and I’m so grateful for her. She welcomed her human dad into our family when she was around two and has since helped us raise two human babies, who are now 5.5 and 11 years old. She absolutely adores them—especially the 11-year-old.

As for everyone else… well, she still hates all humans and animals outside of our household. Anyone who remembers Unique may recall just how spicy she was; I was actually encouraged to pick out a couple other cats to meet because she was so mean haha. We’re taking her sweet and spicy personality on the road this summer and bringing her trailer camping. I anticipate she may dislike the truck ride but will settle in quickly once we’re parked and set up and she is with all her favourite humans.

Thank you, Meow Foundation, for bringing the best furry friend into our lives. ❤️

I adopted my sweet Cheeto just over 2 years ago now from Meow, and could not be more happy! A very wonderful organization that has been nothing but gracious and helpful with the adoption process and even following up periodically afterward. The employees and volunteers are always able to answer any questions you might have, and are very helpful in guiding you in the right direction when it comes to finding the best fit for a kitty companion. I have nothing but good things to say about Meow, and personally believe they are the best cat adoption agency in Calgary.

I really want to like Meow Foundation but it seems they go out of their way to make adoptions difficult. Phones and emails go unanswered, having to make appointments to visit a cat, often multiple appointments to see several cats. It’s like they make you feel like adopting from them is a privilege. The whole thing just gives me a weird feeling.

Ive had much better experiences with other rescues in the area.

I adopted my cat from AARCS! The process was incredibly smooth! I contacted AARCS about a cat they had for adoption living with a foster, they contacted me quickly and set me up with a meeting with the foster and Tigerlily! I got lucky and instantly fell in love with Tigerlily! They provided me with really detailed adoption information, her medical history and after provided me with a bunch of resources for making sure Lily receives the best care after I adopted her. I’m happy the process was so easy because meeting Lily and having her in my life now has been such a blessing! I highly highly recommend AARCS! The fosters they work with are also amazing and you can tell really care for and about the animals they bring in. Check them out there are so many animals in their care waiting for homes! The adoption fees were also incredibly affordable and reasonable.

AARCS was awesome to work with, we adopted 2 beautiful cats Putty and Veda about 3 months ago and they have settled right in. The staff provided lots of resources to set us up for success. If we ever want to add another member to our family this is where we will come, and I would recommend anyone looking to adopt to consider working with AARCS as it was a great experience.

I’d also like to give 5 stars all the fosters who are working with AARCS – you are all doing amazing work and we appreciate you so much for everything you do. You’re helping to give all of these animals a real chance at finding a forever home – it’s a ton of hard work on your part, and you’re helping to change so many lives. You are all amazing!

I used to support AARCS. I don’t anymore.
AARCS is an organization with a great mission, and I will always support efforts to help animals. For that reason, I’m giving five stars, because the animals deserve it. However, if I could rate leadership integrity separately, it would be zero.

Through both my own experience and conversations with past volunteers and insiders, including people I trust, it became clear that there is a serious disconnect between the values AARCS promotes publicly and the way people are treated internally.

The culture, particularly among leadership, has driven away many compassionate and dedicated individuals. What should be a space rooted in empathy often feels toxic and dismissive. The carefully curated public image does not reflect what many have experienced behind the scenes.

Here’s the thing. Many of us could easily write detailed negative reviews or share specific examples of what we experienced. But we choose not to, because we still have integrity, something that, unfortunately, seems to be lacking in the leadership. Instead of listening or growing, they have tried to ostracize people who do not fall in line with their egos or question the status quo.

While animals do benefit from the organization’s work, it is also important to consider how the people making that work happen are treated, and how donor dollars are being used. Concerns about transparency, leadership priorities, and accountability continue to surface.

To the AARCS leadership who may read this and feel the urge to respond, I will say this: it is not necessary. Many of us have seen the internal culture for ourselves and understand what is really happening. Our experiences are valid. No carefully crafted message can change that.

I hope AARCS finds its way back to the values it claims to represent. Until meaningful change happens, my support will go to organizations that show compassion not just to animals, but to people as well.

I’ve adopted two cats from here, and both times it was a wonderful experience. The people and businesses they team up with are fantastic, and I’m still in contact with the person who fostered one of my kitties.

For a while last year I was struggling financially when one of my cats appeared to be sick. I asked AARCS if they could help, and one of their wonderful charities was willing to foot the bill for his vet visit. Luckily for me, he didn’t need to go, but I’ll never forget the compassion they showed me and my senior cat.

Please consider donating to them. They recently had a break in at their Edmonton location, and the robbers took a lot of cash among other things. This is a worthwhile organization doing what they can to help every animal that finds its way to them.

Well I went to drop off wild animal that did not have its mother anymore. When I called, the young girl that was on the phone with me was wonderful very kind very understanding and was clear with instruction and was patient. It made me feel good, happy and feel secure. It made me feel like this was the right choice and the little animal would get the best teeatment.

When I got there there was another lady there who was very abrupt, a rude, and not very understanding of where I was coming from,it was to the point when the lady wouldn’t even bother understanding what I was trying to ask when I was trying to clarify a question that was on the paper when filling out the drop-off form. It made me feel really insecure like I was doing the wrong thing and made me question as to what kind of treatment were the animals getting if this is how I was being talked too , like I was not educated or that I didn’t have feelings. I feel like I was being treated as a child or teen ,when I’m a full grown adult in my thirties.
I was not impressed it made me feel like I didn’t want to drop off another rescue animal there in my life, I would rather drive another 20 or 40 minutes to another place.
I hope that the treatment that the little life that I gave them is superb, contrary to my experience.

I called in to report a wild rabbit in my neighborhood that appeared to have an injured leg. I spoke with Kylah, the clinic supervisor, and unfortunately, it was one of the most unpleasant interactions I’ve had. She was extremely rude and dismissive, showing no empathy or concern. It honestly felt like she was annoyed that I even called about a rabbit. I was just trying to do the right thing, but her attitude made the whole experience really disheartening.

She walked me threw everything I needed to do on my part, also stayed in touch with me to encourage me and answer any questions I might have. Adopted a fur baby from the city and need to rave about how amazing and helpful the staff is! The adoption process was smooth, but they also took the time to answer all questions and make sure we were a good match! Our dog came for a meet and greet at the shelter as well, which in my opinion is a must for introducing new pets to each other 🙂 animal services set us up with a list of trainers and all sorts of resources to rely on. Recently adopted a kitten from here. If theres a cat you have an eye on make sure to get an appointment asap, since multiple people can make an appointment for the same cat. After waiting for weeks for her to be adoptable I would have been heartbroken. But that seems to be typical for adoption places, so if the first one falls through the animal doesn’t have to wait as long. The website is rather accurate. The staff was really nice and worked hard to get us everything we needed.

I want to sincerely thank Parachutes for Pets for going above and beyond for my dog, Star. It’s only recently that I’ve truly begun to grasp just how much care and support he received everything from medical treatment and special food to a safe, loving place to stay. That kind of compassion is rare, and it’s something I will never forget. I see the love and dedication that went into caring for him, and I’m deeply sorry for not fully recognizing or expressing my appreciation sooner.

Melissa and her team provided help at a time when I had no one else to turn to. I am deeply grateful for their compassion, their sacrifice, and the time they took to care for Star when I couldn’t. I understand now that they were balancing many responsibilities and emergencies, and I never intended to come across as demanding. I was just overwhelmed, trying to advocate for my dog the best I could.

I regret any confusion or stress I may have caused. I realize now that there were things I didn’t fully understand, and I’m sorry if any of my actions or messages hurt or offended the team. That was never my intention.

The work this organization does is life-changing. I will always be grateful for the support they gave to both Star and me. I hope others can continue to receive the kind of help and care we were given. From the bottom of my heart thank you.

I truly wish Star could see the team again someday even just for a visit. They were such an important part of his journey, and I only wish they could still be a part of our lives.

With love,
Star & Kristen.

I wish I could find the words to express how grateful I am to have been put in contact with Melissa and Parachutes for Pets, with their generosity and assistance I was able to get my dog the surgery she needed. Before Melissa reached out to me I was so beyond stressed, worrying about how I was going to be able to manage, but after talking to her, getting a tour of the facility, and talking with other members of the staff my mind was put so at ease. I wish I lived closer so I could volunteer my time to give back. I can’t say enough good things!

This is Thor in the beginning I was only looking after him for a while to help a friend with cancer that could not take care of him, but things took a turn, and tour became our Forster dog, and if it wasn’t for parachutes, he wouldn’t be here anymore. They have given me all help and support, not just with food they didn’t just help tour. They helped me to be able to care for him so he’s not another dog that he’s been put down. They are helping me to give him a safe home. Thank you, Courtney and Team.

I have never been so grateful for someone in my entire life. Melissa helped me save the life of my little dog Lexi and me. This women is truly a walking earth angel. She worked so long and hard to help me. She worked from 9am to 11pm. I wish her a wonderful life. She definitely deserves it. We are so blessed to have a caring, understanding, hard working, knowledgeable warm hearted woman in our world. I will «never ever» forget the lengths she’s gone to for me and my little best friend Lexi. She will be included in all my everyday prayers. I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ and may God bless you and watch over you and your family. Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

Atrocious living conditions. I walked in thinking I’d get to visit some rescues but these are puppy mill dogs. The animals all sit in their beds in these glass cages because if they step out they will be walking on bare bars that hurt their feet. The tinier dogs do walk on the bars but it’s apparent it hurts them. They can’t run around and play. There’s barely any sunlight. Absolutely disgusted and heartbroken. These living, loving animals deserve so much better than this. I hope they get shut down.

I contacted this store asking if they could help with a rather unique request, my younger sister has terminal cancer, one of her bucket list wishes was to have a «puppy puddle». I recently bought a dog here, the conditions were not great. We visited the shop a handful of times and all times we were in there it always smelled like poop and old pee. Literally had to cover my nose and mouth because I couldn’t handle it. Don’t get me wrong I love my dog and wish I knew more about this store before I bought my dog. But if you buy from here be prepared to have a dog who doesn’t know how to potty train and a dog who eats their poop. I trained my dog to go potty train and stop eating her poop but the first two weeks were hard and I’m an experienced dog owner. It’s definitely different buying from an actual breeder vs buying from here. It was my first time ever buying from an actual store. I’ve talked to two other top dog customers who bought their dog here and they had the exact same issue with their dogs. The living conditions of the dogs are just not good and they don’t get the proper care that they need. They will probably reply to this review saying they do the most to care for their pups, but I’ve seen it with my own eyes they do not. Some dogs were even covered in poop. They use the same crusty towel to wipe piss on the ground and I’ve seen a puppy eating poop out of another puppy’s bum in the cage they were in. It was disgusting.

Edit:
As I said in my review that they would reply to my review with some dumb excuses to show the public but go take a look at the place yourself and you will see that it’s not ideal. I’ve recently talked to multiple other people who bought their dog from top dog and they all experienced the same issues. Some have even experienced health problems, skin issues, sensitivity issues as well. For them to even say we have no history of your purchasing a dog from this store is a insane I’m not going to go out of my way and write a review if I didn’t buy a dog from you and experience these things myself. We bought our long haired mini dachshund from here.

My wife & I adopted a puppy from a litter that was surrendered to CARS. We weren’t exactly in the market for a new member of the house but, since my wife grew up with Great Danes, we had to check these pups out. There was males & females available but we decided to go with the last available male. CARS cares about the animals they rescue & finding the best home for any animal they come across. They are professional, affordable & incredibly easy to deal with. Ares has now become such a huge part of our lives, we couldn’t possibly imagine our life without him. Please consider to adopt instead of shop. CARS was an incredible organization to come across& we’re so happy we found them!

This organisation relies on its volunteers and they do an exceptional job. We had our application handled in a quick manner with all enquiries answered in a timely manner. We were kept informed by the staff on updates and within a week we had visited the dog we were interested in adopting and we were able to bring our little bundle of Joy home with us. All paperwork was provided to us and when we collected our pup we were given toys, treats and food.

These people genuinely care about the animals they receive in their care and we are so grateful for them providing us with our pooch for his forever home.

Nice place to work and have fun time with cats. They are all very angelic. If you are only a cat person and not a dog person, then this place is not for you. Cat room is all surrounded by dog kennels. Some staff are also careless while hoovering around with dog they forget the cat room and volunteer in cat room. There is a possibility that you can be cornered by a distressed and aggressive dog.

I adopted my two beautiful cats, Sushi and Tapioca (Salsa and Tortilla), from Megan’s Rescue Efforts Society last year, and I cannot express enough gratitude for the joy they have brought into my life. From the moment they arrived, they filled my home with love, energy, and endless cuddles.

Tapioca, with her playful and adventurous spirit, keeps me on my toes, while Sushi is the perfect balance of sweetness and curiosity. They are not just pets—they are my family, my little shadows, and the light of my life. Despite the challenges, including Tapioca’s recent health issues, I am so grateful to have them, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Megan’s Rescue Efforts Society truly goes above and beyond in ensuring their rescues find the perfect home. The love and care they put into their work is evident in every animal they save. If you are looking to adopt, I highly recommend them—you might just find your perfect little soulmates, just like I did.

Volunteers beware!
Megan runs this rescue with an iron fist and will not tolerate any suggestions or questioning of her methods. Better memorize and follow all her rules and regulations to the letter or you will be terminated if you ‘mess up,’ like I was. Was only given a generalized explanation for being dismissed as a volunteer after fostering, donating and socially supporting. No second chances here, even if you mean well and no harm was done. Very hurtful and upsetting experience.

Catalog of services offered by pet adoption centers in Calgary

    Animal Intake and Assessment

Pet adoption centers in Calgary undertake the crucial service of animal intake and assessment. This involves accepting animals from various sources, including surrenders, strays, and rescues. A thorough assessment is then conducted to evaluate the animal’s health, temperament, and any special needs they might have.

    Veterinary Care and Medical Services

Comprehensive veterinary care and medical services are essential for animals in adoption centers. This encompasses routine vaccinations, deworming, parasite prevention, spaying/neutering, and treatment for any medical conditions discovered during intake or ongoing care.

    Behavioral Assessments and Modification

Many animals entering adoption centers may have behavioral challenges. Centers provide behavioral assessments and modification programs. Qualified trainers and behaviorists evaluate an animal's temperament and work to address issues like anxiety, aggression, or fear through positive reinforcement techniques.

    Foster Care Program Management

Recognizing that not all animals thrive in a shelter environment, pet adoption centers manage foster care programs. These programs place animals with temporary caregivers who provide a home-like setting, allowing them to socialize and adjust while awaiting permanent adoption.

    Adoption Counseling and Matching

Successful adoptions require careful consideration and proper adoption counseling and matching. Adoption centers provide guidance to prospective adopters, helping them understand the responsibilities of pet ownership and matching them with animals that suit their lifestyles and preferences.

    Pet Enrichment and Socialization

Maintaining an animal's physical and mental well-being is vital. Adoption centers provide pet enrichment and socialization programs. These initiatives include providing toys, puzzles, playtime, and opportunities to interact with other animals and people, reducing stress and promoting healthy development.

    Community Outreach and Education

Pet adoption centers actively engage in community outreach and education. This involves participating in local events, offering workshops on responsible pet ownership, and partnering with schools and organizations to promote animal welfare awareness.

    Lost and Found Pet Services

Adoption centers provide essential lost and found pet services to the community. They act as a central point for reporting lost pets, facilitating reunions between owners and their animals, and providing resources for preventing pet loss.

Frequently Asked Questions about Pet Adoption Centers in Calgary

What types of animals can I typically find at Calgary adoption centers?

Calgary adoption centers commonly house a variety of animals. You're most likely to encounter dogs and cats, but many centers also offer small animals such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and sometimes even birds. The specific types of animals available change frequently based on current intakes and adoptions.

What is the adoption process like at most Calgary pet adoption centers?

The adoption process usually involves several steps. First, you're likely to browse the center's website or visit in-person to view available animals. Next, you're often required to submit an adoption application. This may be followed by a meet-and-greet with the animal and a home visit, depending on the center's policy. A final step is the signing of an adoption contract.

What fees are typically associated with adopting a pet?

Adoption fees vary based on the animal's age, species, and the adoption center's policies. Fees generally cover vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and spay/neuter services. Expect to pay more for younger animals or those with special needs. These fees help the centers continue their work and provide for the care of other animals.

Do adoption centers check for compatibility between adopters and pets?

Most Calgary adoption centers prioritize finding the best possible match between adopters and pets. They often ask detailed questions about your lifestyle, home environment, and experience with animals. This process helps ensure a successful and harmonious adoption for both the animal and the adopter.

What if I’m interested in adopting a senior pet?

Adopting a senior pet can be incredibly rewarding. Many adoption centers have programs specifically to promote the adoption of older animals. Senior pets often require less energy and can be easier to manage, making them great companions for individuals or families seeking a more relaxed pet ownership experience. The centers frequently offer reduced adoption fees for seniors.

What happens if I can no longer care for an adopted pet?

If you find yourself unable to care for an adopted pet, it's crucial to contact the adoption center immediately. They typically require you to return the animal to the center, as stipulated in the adoption contract. This ensures the animal receives proper care and can be rehomed appropriately. Attempting to rehome the animal yourself can have unforeseen consequences.

Are there any age restrictions for adopting a pet?

While there aren't always strict age limits, many adoption centers require adopters to be of legal age to sign an adoption contract. Younger individuals may need to have a parent or guardian co-sign the agreement. The centers want to ensure that potential adopters are prepared for the responsibility of pet ownership.

Can I adopt a pet if I live in a condo or apartment?

Adopting a pet when living in a condo or apartment is possible, but often requires approval from your building management. Many buildings have pet restrictions, including weight limits and breed restrictions. It's essential to verify these rules before applying to adopt a pet to avoid any future complications.

What support do adoption centers provide after the adoption is finalized?

Many adoption centers offer ongoing support to adopters. This might include advice on pet care, training, and behavior. Some centers also have veterinary partnerships and can provide referrals for medical care. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance; the centers want to see your new pet thriving.

How can I ensure a smooth transition for my newly adopted pet?

A successful transition for a newly adopted pet involves patience and understanding. Provide a safe and quiet space for your new pet to adjust to its new home. Introduce new people and pets gradually. Maintain a consistent routine for feeding, exercise, and playtime. Positive reinforcement and gentle handling are essential to build trust and establish a strong bond.
