We had a birthday party for my daughter at the studio and it couldn’t have been a better party! Glow in the dark theme was awesome and enjoyed by all the kids and adults alike! Greatest place, run by kind and professional owner. I totally recommend this place!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Palak for two different events, and I can’t recommend her enough. She is incredibly professional, creative, and so talented at what she does.
Her face painting adds such a special touch — it’s vibrant, detailed, and always leaves people smiling. She knows how to connect with all ages and creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere wherever she goes.
Whether it’s a community gathering or a private party, Palak brings her A-game every single time. So grateful to have had her be part of our events — and I’d work with her again in a heartbeat!

What a great class and great space in general! I signed up for the 8-week wheel-throwing class with Lael and had a fantastic time (re)learning how to throw and centre and trim and glaze. The studio itself is wonderful – large, open, and airy with lots of natural light and plants. The class instruction for the various steps is efficient, and with lots of hands-on time and personal instruction based on your individual needs.
I loved that there isn’t a charge-per-piece here. Your course comes with a bag of clay that is (probably) all you’ll need if you’re a beginner, and includes all glazing and firing as well. And if you need more, purchasing another bag of clay also includes the glazing and firing costs. I also really appreciated that you’re given an hour before and after your class in the studio so you can maximize your time there.
Well worth the time and money, and I’ll be signing up again!

Fantastic stone carving class!
I took the 6-week stone carving class with Alex Boyd as the instructor and had a great time! Alex really knows his craft and is a good teacher. The vibe in the class was relaxed and upbeat, and I always looked forward to going.
Robert Pearce (☆ 5/5)

The wine and wheel night is honestly one of the best date nights! The girls are so helpful teaching first timers how to throw clay. The building is so cool with all the plants and clay pieces. Unlimited wine helps as well, I would recommend this to anyone!
Joslyn Vavrek (☆ 5/5)

Great night out with my wife. We did the date night wine and wheel. Few glasses of wine and a few hours of working. Everyone goes home with 2 pieces of art.
Don’t worry if you are not that great, the amazing instructors will help you out and make sure you have something to paint and take home.
Would recommend to all that want an interactive date night or go out with friends!
Mitchell Jensen (☆ 5/5)

Wow what a wonderful way to spend an evening! The team was so friendly and helpful. The energy in the space is a perfect balance between zen and fun. I will 100% be back and very highly recommend it!
Tamara McMahon (☆ 5/5)

Fun workshop and date night! At the beginning we were given a tutorial on how to wheel, but still had help throughout the class, it was fun and cool to try something new! Highly recommend attending their Wheel & Wine date night!
Kelsey Alyssa (☆ 5/5)

The level one stained glass class was the perfect introduction to the art. Our instructor India was a wealth of knowledge and really made me grateful I signed up for the class! The studio space is beautiful and I was grateful for the opportunity to come in after hours to work on my piece. I would highly recommend this class to anyone curious about making stained glass art.

Customer Reviews
Me & my partner had such an amazing time at Mosaic Art Studio Calgary! The workshop was extremely fun, and I loved being able to take home a personalized Turkish lamp that we created together. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, making the entire experience even better.
They’ve recently moved to a larger studio on the second floor — it was a little tricky to find at first, but thankfully, a staff member spotted us and kindly guided us. Once inside, the atmosphere was bright and inspiring, with so many designs to choose from to truly make your lamp your own!
I also appreciated that you have the option to pay for a solo experience or partner up with a friend or significant other at a discounted «helper» rate, making it even more fun and affordable. Plus, with the new space, they’re planning even more exciting workshops in the future — I can’t wait to go back!
Highly recommend this unique and creative experience to anyone looking for a memorable and meaningful activity!
Emily (☆ 5/5)

My fiancé and I had such a fun time doing this activity. Although the price is on the higher side, it is absolutely reasonable for what this entails. The instructors were so kind and thorough in explanations. They had a huge variety and selection of colors to choose from, and gave good instructions and materials for completing the projects at home. Hoping to see expansion in workshops as we’d love to come back and do something else!
Victoria Basile (☆ 5/5)

What a fun experience! We held a team building event for work here and it was so much fun. Tuba is a great instructor and each person got to make a piece exactly to their liking. Highly recommend!
Tracy Wang (☆ 5/5)

I had such a great time at Mosaic Art Studio in Calgary! I knew it would be fun, but it was even better than I expected. The workshop was really hands-on and relaxing, and the owners were so kind and helpful. They made everything easy to follow and were so patient. It’s a must-try—such a hidden gem in the city and perfect to do with friends and family. I left with a beautiful lamp and now I definitely need more than one! Can’t wait to go back!
Bubbles Blue (☆ 5/5)

Great start to my day. Went with some work friends for 10:30 session. We had a great time. The instructor was so kind and helpful. A great creative activity and get to top it off you get a complimentary Turkish tea and delight. Highly recommend as a fund group activity or on your own.

Had an absolute blast at Mosaic Art Studio Calgary! The instructors were total rockstars. super patient and guided me every step of the way. Ended up making the most gorgeous lamp, and honestly, I can’t believe I pulled it off! The vibe in the studio was chill but inspiring, perfect for getting creative. 10/10 recommend if you wanna try something fun and hands-on. Trust me, you’ll walk out feeling like an artist!
Sydney Keeley (☆ 5/5)

So much fun! Such a great birthday date for my partner and I. Really enjoyed the whole experience and the instructors were fantastic. Looking forward to having our candle holders in our home.
The only improvement I could suggest is more clear instructions for parking and entry. Even just a quick google map screenshot with some lines drawn on it would be great!
Looking forward to coming back again.

We had a great time as a group of 3. We had lots of fun picking out our pottery and Danni was so great explaining all the different paint colours and the number of coats needed for how dark it would be. She also helped me with special techniques for painting gradient colours. We weren’t rushed at all. And I think our pieces turned out so great. We can’t wait to see what they look like once they are ready for pick up!

This Oak Bay location is convenient, tons of parking, and we had a blast! Alex is an excellent host. The place is clean, very well organized, and the clients varied from Mom’s and small kids, to seniors. Not expensive, and much more fun than my 65 year old male mind figured it would be. Need a new coffee cup or a tea pot? my wife and I did pasta bowls. I know we will be back to make another couple.
Ian MacKay (☆ 5/5)

A wonderful place for creativity and relaxation! A great selection of ceramics to paint, a cozy atmosphere, and friendly staff. You can let your imagination run wild and create a unique piece with your own hands. I really enjoyed it—I’ll definitely come again!
Nikita Bielavin (☆ 5/5)

They have a variety range of craft(Starting from 8$ only) at their shelf. You can pick and choose any of them. They will also provide you color and other stuff(this is already included in the price of the stuff you are picking up). You will color them and they will take around one week before they deliver the actual things which looks amazing. You can either reserve it or just hop in. I have never seen this place so occupied that you have to book it in advance. Also they do not have any time limitation on how much time you want to spend there. They do organise birthday party and social gathering but I have never seen such things happening over there. Persons who normally sits at the counter are very nice and friendly. If you or your child, friends are interested in color, painting, pottery and craft, I would recommend this place.
The place(for which I have given my rating was at Deerfoot city: This is not here anymore).
Please click on ‘Thumbs up/down’ on helpful button. This will help me to get a feedback on how I am doing.

The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is friendly and always ready to help. It’s a great way to spend time and create something unique with your own hands. I’ll definitely be back!
Daria Ostrovska (☆ 5/5)

Great experience! Lots of fun, had a wide range of ceramics to paint and amazing colours to choose from (including some super cool ‘confetti’ paint!)

had a great experience here, amazing selection of paints and brushes, I was looking for more hog hair brushes but the selection is good enough! I only come to leave a review as I had such a great experience just to end it with a worker that generally had a bad vibe and kinda ruined the overall experience with a sour taste in my mouth. when we walked up me and my boyfriend greeted this employee with hello and hi, she didn’t even say hello just stared down at the register as she opened it, after I said «not even a hello», after that (with attitude) she responded «okay so do you want a bag» and after paying, she said the usually pleasantries of «have a good day» and me and my boyfriend both responded «you too» and she said «sure». of which I responded back «sure» in a long tone, just so MAYBE this unsocial conversation could be noted by her, there was no attempt in pleasantries whatsoever no «did you find everything alright» NOT EVEN HELLO. Anyways ex- service worker and I was shocked by that treatment at a wonderful store. she’s the plus sized girl working the register at 5:12 on July 12th.

Art store with a large variety of items for every artist, every medium. Staff aren’t the most friendly but if you have a specific question, they’ll answer it. The prices are standard for specialized art supplies. they have some interesting gift items too and usually items on sale to grab a bargain. I purchased about $250 worth of art supplies as I am going to become a famous YouTuber and artist, and I found everything I needed including pastels, watercolours and acrylic paint.
Martin Matahari (☆ 5/5)

Great selection of sketchbooks with great prices. Infinite selection of paints, brushes, colored pencils, felts, pastels and more. Friendly helpful staff. Lots of fun Bob Ross gifts! (Note – not located in Kensington. Good location near Heritage Meadows with lots of free parking)

Melba and her company are outstanding! I took a soap making workshop in February and loved it so much I asked her to host one at my Day Spa in Cochrane. It went really well, so fun and informative. Melba is a true community leader and such a great spirit. Supporting local, sustainable and the soaps are beautiful. Looking forward to doing more!
Krysta Olsen (☆ 5/5)

Super fun! Melba is very knowledgeable. We had great walk in the forest and found some mushrooms (edible and not)!
Jessica Lee (☆ 5/5)

Bowness Soapworks (inside Greenbriar Market) is a hidden gem with an incredible variety of handmade soaps. Every bar is unique, both in scent and design, and it’s clear how much thought goes into each one. You can honestly spend 15 minutes just smelling everything—they have something for everyone.
Whether you’re into fresh and citrusy, deep and earthy, or herbal and calming, they’ve got a scent that will win you over. A few of my favourites so far:
• Mountain Wave (bergamot, lavender & pine) – smells like a mountain morning.
• You Can Do It (charcoal, patchouli & lavender) – grounding and inspiring.
• Margo’s Mint (eucalyptus & cucumber) – super fresh and playful.
• Lemongrassi Lakes (rosemary & lemongrass) – bright and energizing.
The labels are witty, the ingredients are clean, and the aesthetic is rustic yet refined. It’s clear this is more than just soap—it’s local art with personality.
Highly recommend checking them out next time you’re at Greenbriar Market. It’s the kind of place you walk into for one thing and leave with five.

Melba is a gem and a true force in the Calgary small business community. We’ve worked with her on a few projects related to custom merchandise, and she has consistently exceeded our expectations. Her work is not only high-quality and reflected our brand, but she also delivers unexpected value in terms of new customer reach. We highly recommend Melba; she provides a ton of value beyond the tangible products and services she offers.
David Pierce (☆ 5/5)

What an experience! Melba is a true giver to the community and such a great educator/instructor. She’s so funny but clear when it came to soap making. Calgary is so lucky to have her!!!! Thank you Melba :^)

We had the absolute best time at Bowness Soapworks soap-making workshop! Our group of five came for a company team-building event, and Melba made it unforgettable. She welcomed us with warmth, shared her inspiring journey, and kept us engaged with fun stories and hands-on soap making. We learned so much—not just about soap, but also about passion, creativity, and perseverance. Melba is a wonderful host, educator, and motivator. Highly recommend this experience for any group looking to bond, create, and leave inspired!
Thank you Melba!!
Suzanne Cooke (☆ 5/5)

Melba’s hand made pottery is so unique and warm! She did a custom order for our group and was so creative with her beautiful design. Melba also did a mentoring session with our students where we learned to make soap that was INCREDIBLE. Her wisdom, kindness, talent and charisma inspired our students to try new things and aim for higher goals. Grateful to know Melba and be able to purchase mindful, sustainable and beautiful items!

It was such a fun and lovely place to sit and chat with friends! Loved all the pottery options prices can be steep depending on what you pick, but you are mostly just paying for the pottery, all and all super fun place to chill have some coffee and chat, however you have to pay for parking if you drive there.
Update: I got my pottery pieces glazed and done, and they look super cute. I’m super happy with how they turned out and will be coming again!
Omega Howl (☆ 5/5)

I would absolutely not recommend Color Me Mine to anyone, especially if you are looking for real drawing or art classes for kids. This studio is completely misleading. They advertise «art classes» but in reality, when we arrived, it looked like a casual date night for 50+ year olds with just three kids sitting in a corner — no structure, no teacher leading any activities. It was simply «sit down, paint something if you want,» with no guidance whatsoever.
We paid $40 just for a basic ceramic piece, a brush, and some colors — something we could have easily done at home for free. The staff were completely disorganized, running around aimlessly without greeting or even acknowledging us for over five minutes after we arrived. Zero hospitality, zero art instruction — just chaos.
When we asked for a refund after realizing what was going on, the situation turned into a full drama. Staff members refused to refund and argued with us for almost an hour. They eventually called the manager, who, instead of listening, just kept talking over us without giving any chance to explain the issue. In any service environment, listening to a dissatisfied customer is critical — she clearly lacked the training and basic professionalism for customer service, and frankly, seemed mentally unstable during the interaction.
It took me raising my voice and creating an uncomfortable scene just to finally get them to agree to refund. Otherwise, they would have continued arguing endlessly. My child hated the experience and wanted to leave immediately.
For $40, you are much better off buying real art supplies and enjoying a proper activity at home. Absolutely disappointing experience — I strongly advise everyone to avoid this place.
Milana Polskikh (☆ 1/5)

It was a nice little few hours spent with some friends. They have some nice varieties of different items you can choose from. They have a cafe connected so you can get drinks while you’re painting your pieces. They had nice paint colours, however their paint brushes were so cheap! Like we pay a premium for the art that we’re painting. At least supply a bit higher quality tools. I even saw they had a pencil brand from dollarama, so I wouldn’t be surprised if other brushes are from there as well. Some of the hairs came out. Supposed to be relaxing, but I would be more relaxed with better tools
Sori Luk (☆ 3/5)

I painted a small sculpture here in November 2024. They were supposed to contact me when it was ready for pickup, but I never received any call. I went there yesterday to follow up, and they told me they’d call me once they found it. A few hours later, I got a call, but I wasn’t in the area to pick it up immediately, so I decided to go the next morning. However, when I arrived, they couldn’t find my order again and asked me to give them more time to locate it. They said they would call me once it’s found.
This place is extremely disorganized and poorly managed. There seems to be no manager present, and the overall experience was very frustrating. I do not recommend this place at all.
Farzaneh Ehtemam (☆ 1/5)

First time at this place and it was super enjoyable and relaxing! I wish it was a little bigger since it gets busy but the workers are super helpful! I didn’t give them a 5 star because for the amount we pay brushes could definitely improve & they need chair cushions! Most people need two hours to complete a piece and it can be super uncomfortable on a wooden chair, plus cushions are super cheap!
Alissa Low (☆ 4/5)

Just love going here with my daughter. This is easily the best Daddy Daughter day activity. The staff are super friendly and very helpful. Good Earth is in the building so you can get your snacks and drinks while you create art

FINALLY!!! Color Me Mine is OPEN;) If you want to get out if the house, have a good time with friends or just explore a new hobby the Color Me Mine is for you. Would you like to learn how to paint ceramics, make glass fusion art or plates, maybe make a customized wine glass? Drop in between 10-6 most days and choose one or more hobbies to try. With Good Earth Cafe next door you can relax and paint a portrait while enjoying a cappuccino. The staff is amazing and they will help you at any level you need. We had a great experience here! We celebrate my son’s birthday here, the staffs here are so awesome and very accommodating. We will definitely come back here for more painting works!!

We just went there on Sat and we had so much fun. Super excited to pick up our items. The girl who took our reservation was super sweet. Mave, another girl there was super helpful, very attentive and polite. We ran a little over on time and luckily there was a cancellation. Perhaps I will pick a smaller item next time. This wasn’t only a great experience for myself and my daughter, but to my friend from out of town and her daughter. Time flies when your having fun.

My girlfriend went here, had an amazing time painting and has been asking me to go check it out, we get there with a hour and 15 minutes to close. The girl at the door turned us away, saying we needed to be there at 630(8pm close) and that they were too busy. All she wanted to do was finish the piece from the first time, you just lost customers because your staff probably didn’t feel like cleaning. Oh yeah. And pic showing how busy it was. Sad staff

School holidays and we need to get out of the house. Let’s make memories!
It is oodles of fun to make doodles on crockery! I was amazed at the variety of people here. There were siblings dropped off by parents running errands, entire families doing projects, groups of girl friends etc.
Basically you choose a piece of pottery, then a color palette and BEGIN! The staff are rockstars. Seriously. Our kidlet is inquisitive and full of energy and they were kind and accommodating. I felt timid about requesting more colors and they insisted it was no problem fetching them.
You leave the project to be fired in the kiln and pick it up (fairly quickly) after. I inquired about pricing before I went. As I look every night at my lantern when the timer LED candle goes on and I remember the fun we had, it feels totally worth it!

My friend and I entered the building for some good morning pottery, we were greeted with the brightest smile and happiest attitude. The experience was nothing but lovely and memorable, Courtney was the key component for the fun time! If anyone deserves anything, it’s Courtney; fun to talk to, very helpful, and checked on us multiple times! Courtney is the best pottery worker in Calgary, nay, the world. -those two girls at that one table

I’ve been to 2 other locations (Canmore and Deerfoot City) and have to say this location is my least favorite. They don’t leave the paints on the table for you to use as needed like the other locations do. You have to «order» them like an item on a menu and the staff pour it for you. It just feels like an unnecessary step. They also don’t have water on the table for cleaning or soaking the paintbrushes. They didn’t give us a pick up slip or tell us when our pieces would be ready. They did end up calling to notify us when they were ready. It was 7pm and they told me I couldn’t come that night even though I was 15 minutes away – supposed to be open until 8pm. But if they don’t have customers they want to shut down early. I guess pick up customers don’t count. The next day I could pick up was Monday of the long weekend. Google hours said they were open, their voicemail didn’t mention holiday hours, and there was no sign on their door saying they’d be closed for the holiday.

Had a great time chatting with my friend and painting some pottery. Very accommodating staff. Will definitely go back.

What a great place for art!!
Kids had a blast smashing the paints!
They had a very unique experience of celebrating birthday and learning too.
You may need to bring extra old clothes they may get dirty afterwards.
Ferdie De Leon (☆ 5/5)

Fun for all ages!! The atmosphere is inspiring, and I find the community vibe very inviting. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to unleash their creativity!
PS I would post pictures of my sculpture but it’s so bad

I haven’t been to this place since COVID but I’m happy to report that it’s just as amazing as I remember! We had a hand-built clay cookie jar workshop that was really fun. Our instructor (fancy Clancy?) was fantastic and very patient with all the participants. Excited to go back and glaze the project. Only downside I’d say is limited options for glazing, but I’d still definitely recommend the experience!
V T (☆ 5/5)

After two Covid birthday parties at the playground, we wanted something special for our daughter and her grade one friends. The staff were so organized and managed to do three parties at once making sure every kid had a great time, got tidied up and had time for cake and celebrations. The facilitators were patient and kind and clearly love their jobs and love kids. Highly recommend for a hands-on, fun experience that really honors the process and celebrates the effort of each child.

Unfortunately, I didn’t go here for anything art related, but I sure wish I had! It’s an adorably quaint and cozy little art studio. The entrance had lots of super cute take home oven bake figurine kits that looked amazing and easy. If only if I’d had the money, I totally wanted one of each. And there were several pamphlets to browse offering different activities, classes and day camps. I’m absolutely gonna go back there at some point to «Get My Art On»!!
(Hopefully they’re patient and give tons of guidance, I couldn’t «art» my way out of a wet paper bag to save my life! )
Oleta Downey (☆ 4/5)

I have been here quite a lot and had a different experiences each time. The price is reasonable, two for thirty-five dollars, a great price to dab into the world of ceramics. Here is where I fell in love with the wheel, my love for clay, and my love & hate for hand-building.
If you want to dabbled in clay without a big commitment, I would give 4Cats a go.
Jade Perez (☆ 4/5)

I had an excellent time here. The staff was great and facilitated an awesome team building event. Everyone had fun and ended up a little messy, but that was definitely the whole point! Would definitely recommend for a group!

This studio is a hidden gem in the NE We used to visit its old location in the NW way back when they were there.
We came here first for a birthday party, then visit with a friend to do some pottery painting. The kids loved the mugs, etc. they painted from the party. The studio is very nicely organized…we especially like sitting close to the entrance where they are beautiful tiles on the wall – all masterpieces.
There are some many different paints to choose from colours to textures. Kate had a great way to explain how the paints work and how the final products may look. We were happy that she guided us through our painting and helped us experimented. Thank you Kate, see you next time. A fabulous place to spend time with friends or kids.

Me and my friends did pottery. It was a fire experience!
Kate and Amelia are so kind, patient and fun. Kate explained things thoroughly and helped along the way. It’s a cute studio.
I never thought I would be able to make anything decent. It definitely looks easier than it is. So much fun! I can’t wait to come back to paint it.
Sori Luk (☆ 5/5)

Had a great time! We were told they make about 80% of their stock themselves so the variety isn’t as wide as companies that get their stock outsourced, but we were all happy with our choices. Very reasonably priced compared to bigger companies as well!
Sarah (☆ 5/5)

Horrible and rude owner. Very condescending for no reason, and was also loudly speaking poorly about a customer who had called to inquire about setting up a first date for their child; she was mocking that customer with another customer.. They were also extremely rude when inquiring about pickup at the 3 week mark as they mentioned to reach out if we hadn’t heard back from them by then. Very very very few choices of items to paint. Will not return again as the customer service at this establishment is absolutely terrible.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! Highly recommend to come here and paint pottery!! Friendly staff and owner, paint is non chemical and washes off hands and clothing if you get ‘em messy! Environment is so friendly and so welcoming, different style of utensils to use, 1:1 sessions for wheel pottery, and affordable/reasonable prices on pottery ready to paint! Seatings is main lobby & upstairs! I had my first time wheel session with Fire Escape, and let me tell you how much fun it was to make something that you did!! It’s $35 per person, which includes instructor, material & kiln service. (You can find more details on their website and social media!) after I had finished my wheel session, I made a bowl and a mug, which I then went on to doing some painting, along with my friend!! This bowl, I traced the outline in sharpie, then used a puffy paint to trace back the outline and fill in the parts that needed it’s colour! At first the colour will not look like the one you picked, but don’t worry! It’s going to turn out wonderful!!! After 2 and more so hours (everyone’s painting varies!) it was ready to be fired up in the kiln! It takes around 2 or so weeks until your pottery is ready to be picked up!!! I definitely will keep coming here to paint, thank you so much for the experience that I learnt from here!!!!
You will see my pictures of before and after!
xo (☆ 5/5)

Love coming here. Relaxing atmosphere and the staff are wonderful, helpful, very friendly and welcoming! Pottery selection is always great! It’s been 4 days and my stuff is already ready to pick up!

Introduction to Ceramics: Beginner Classes
Ceramic classes in Calgary often begin with introduction to ceramics courses tailored for beginners. These sessions cover the fundamental techniques, including clay preparation, hand-building methods like pinch pots and coil building, and a basic overview of the glazing process. It's a foundation for those with little to no prior experience.
Wheel Throwing Workshops
For those interested in creating pottery on the wheel, wheel throwing workshops are available. These classes focus on learning the essential skills for centering, pulling, and shaping clay on a potter’s wheel. Students typically progress from basic cylinder forms to more complex shapes.
Hand-Building Techniques: Slab Construction
Beyond the wheel, hand-building techniques like slab construction offer a different creative avenue. These classes delve into methods using rolled slabs of clay to construct objects, allowing for more geometric and architectural forms. It's a versatile approach for creating tiles, boxes, and sculptures.
Sculptural Ceramics: Figurative Work
Ceramic classes may also focus on sculptural ceramics with an emphasis on figurative work. These sessions involve learning the skills to model and shape clay into representational figures, teaching students about form, proportion, and anatomical detail. This style requires a solid understanding of clay properties and construction techniques.
Glazing and Surface Decoration
A critical aspect of ceramics is glazing and surface decoration. Classes often dedicate time to exploring different glazing techniques, including layering, sgraffito (scratching through a glaze layer), and underglazes. The focus is on understanding glaze chemistry and creating desired effects on the finished piece.
Advanced Ceramics: Multi-Piece Construction
For experienced ceramicists, advanced ceramics sessions may explore multi-piece construction. This involves creating complex forms by joining multiple clay pieces, pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques and allowing for intricate designs.
Raku Firing Workshops
A unique firing experience is offered through Raku firing workshops. This Japanese firing technique involves quickly removing pottery from the kiln while still red-hot and placing it in a container with combustible materials, resulting in unique and unpredictable surface effects.
Specialized Ceramic Projects: Tile Making
Some ceramic classes focus on specialized ceramic projects, such as tile making. These sessions cover techniques for creating decorative and functional tiles, including surface decoration, glazing, and firing methods to achieve desired aesthetic qualities.
Frequently asked questions about ceramic classes in Calgary
What types of ceramic classes are typically offered in Calgary?
Ceramic classes in Calgary usually offer a range of options. You can find beginner-level classes focusing on the fundamentals like hand-building techniques (pinch pots, coil building, slab construction) and introductory wheel throwing. More advanced classes might cover complex wheel throwing forms, surface decoration techniques like glazing and slip trailing, or even sculptural ceramics. Some studios may also offer specialized workshops focusing on specific firing methods or ceramic styles.
What is the difference between hand-building and wheel throwing?
Hand-building involves shaping clay using your hands and simple tools. Techniques include pinch pots (pinching the clay to form a shape), coil building (rolling clay into coils and joining them), and slab construction (using rolled-out sheets of clay). Wheel throwing, on the other hand, utilizes a potter’s wheel to center and shape the clay as it rotates. Both methods produce beautiful results, but require different skills and techniques.
What is the typical class size for ceramic classes in Calgary?
Class sizes can vary depending on the studio and the type of class. Beginner classes often have smaller class sizes – typically between 6 and 10 students – to allow for more individual attention from the instructor. Advanced workshops may have slightly larger groups, but most studios strive to maintain a manageable student-to-instructor ratio to ensure everyone receives adequate support and instruction.
What equipment and materials are usually provided in a ceramic class?
Most ceramic studios provide the basic equipment and materials for the class. This usually includes clay, tools for hand-building and wheel throwing, aprons to protect clothing, and access to the kiln for firing. However, some studios may require students to purchase their own specific tools or specialty clays. It's important to confirm what’s included and what’s expected beforehand.
How long do ceramic classes typically last?
The duration of ceramic classes varies. Short workshops may last for a few hours, while longer courses can span several weeks, with classes meeting once or twice a week. A typical course might involve classes lasting between 2 and 3 hours, allowing sufficient time for instruction, hands-on practice, and cleanup. The overall time commitment should be considered when choosing a class.
What is the cost of ceramic classes in Calgary?
The cost of ceramic classes in Calgary can range significantly based on the class length, instructor experience, and studio facilities. Introductory workshops might cost around $50-$100, while multi-week courses could range from $200 to $500 or more. Some studios offer membership options that include studio access and firing fees. It’s wise to compare pricing and included services before enrolling.
Do I need any prior experience to take a ceramic class?
Generally, no prior experience is required to take a basic ceramic class. Most classes are designed for beginners and assume no prior knowledge of ceramic techniques. However, advanced classes might require some foundational experience or a portfolio of previous work. It's always a good idea to check the class description to confirm the skill level required.
What should I wear to a ceramic class?
It's crucial to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty! Ceramics can be a messy process, and clay splatters are common. It’s recommended to wear old clothes or clothes you are willing to sacrifice. Closed-toe shoes are also recommended for safety. Many studios provide aprons to protect your clothing, but wearing layers underneath is a good idea.
What is the firing process, and what role does it play in ceramic creation?
The firing process is essential in ceramic creation; it involves heating the clay in a kiln to high temperatures. This process transforms the malleable clay into a durable, permanent ceramic object. The heat causes a chemical change in the clay, causing it to harden and become vitrified (non-porous). Different temperatures and firing techniques are used for different types of clay and glazes. Kiln firing is usually handled by the studio staff.
Can I glaze my pieces in a class, or is that handled by the studio?
Many studios offer glazing opportunities as part of their classes, while others handle glazing themselves. Glazing involves applying a thin layer of glass-like material to the ceramic piece, which creates color, texture, and a waterproof seal. If the studio offers glazing, you may be guided on color selection and application techniques. Confirm the studio’s policy regarding glazing before you enroll, as it can affect the overall cost and time commitment.
