Customer Reviews
For our first date night in five months – since we’d been traveling with our kids – and to celebrate our 15th anniversary, we discovered OMO, and we were completely charmed! We arrived on a Thursday evening without a reservation and were warmly welcomed. We were seated at a table that would soon be joined by a chef.

We ordered the Date Night menu, which was both delicious and reasonably priced. The chef’s performance was fantastic – we loved his enthusiasm and energy.

To celebrate our anniversary, they surprised us with a sweet card featuring a photo they had just taken of us, souvenir chopsticks, and a small dessert. The owner even came to chat with us and kindly prepared a dish for us to take home to our kids.

Service, food, overall experience: 10/10!
We’ll definitely be back and can’t wait to share this amazing spot with our family and friends.

My hubby and I dined here for the first time this past weekend, and let me tell you—we were not disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, and the chef’s entertainment was top-notch, keeping us laughing the whole time. We left with leftovers because our bellies were completely satisfied. The servers were also attentive and lovely. We will definitely be back!

I first came to OMO last week with a friend, and we had such a great time! Chef Remz was so caring, he kept checking in to make sure we were enjoying our food, which made the experience even better. Our server, Stephanie, was super friendly and welcoming, and we left feeling really well taken care of.

Because of that, I decided to bring my whole family (all 8 of us!) back tonight. This time, Chef Tom was in charge, and my boys absolutely loved the fire show! The food was amazing, and we all had such a fun night.

Big shoutout to Chef Remz, Chef Tom, and Stephanie for being so awesome! You guys made both visits so special. We’ll definitely be back again!

It was our first time here. The service was excellent. The food was acceptable although nothing stood out but it was enjoyable. A bit let down on the ramen because it was no where close as tonkatsu ramen. Other than that it a good place to eat, but not the ramen though.

If you’re looking for an interactive, flavorful, and delightfully immersive dining experience, Gyu-Kaku delivers on every front. From the moment we were seated, the ambiance felt warm and inviting—perfect for both casual dinners and special celebrations.

Food & Presentation:
The menu is extensive and thoughtfully curated. We opted for a selection of meats including beef short rib, pork belly, garlic shoyu chicken, and premium steak cubes—all served fresh and beautifully plated. Each cut was well-marinated and grilled to perfection at our own pace on the in-table grill. The variety was ideal for both first-time diners and returning guests.

Standout dishes:

Garlic Fried Rice served in a hot stone bowl—savory, aromatic, and comforting.

Tonkotsu Ramen—deep umami broth with a perfect soft-boiled egg, tender meat, and noodles that held their texture well.

Crispy Chicken Karaage—golden, juicy, and served with a creamy dipping sauce that elevated the flavor.

Udon Stir Fry—light yet satisfying, with crisp vegetables and thick noodles in a flavorful sauce.

Kimchi and Appetizers—the kimchi was bright and tangy with a good kick, and the fried wonton starters were crispy little bites of heaven.

Drinks:
The mango lemonade and lychee soda were refreshing and beautifully served in mason jars with fruit pieces—an aesthetic and flavorful touch.

Service:
The staff were attentive, helpful, and patient with grill tips and food recommendations. Our server checked in regularly without being intrusive and ensured we had everything we needed throughout the meal.

Atmosphere:
The ambiance was cozy and authentically themed. The wood-paneled booths and grilling setup gave a relaxed, intimate feel while maintaining a lively energy across the room. It was clean, organized, and well-ventilated despite the tabletop grills.

Final Thoughts:
Whether you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine or simply love a hands-on dining experience, Gyu-Kaku offers something truly special. The quality of ingredients, attention to detail, and overall hospitality make it a place I’ll be happy to return to—and recommend wholeheartedly.

I had an amazing experience at this Japanese BBQ restaurant! The quality of the meat was outstanding — fresh, tender, and full of flavor. The atmosphere was cozy and authentic, perfect for a relaxed dinner. What really made the night special was our server, Khoa — they were incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. They made sure our grill was always just right and offered great recommendations. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Great service.
It was quite a bit busy when we came by, even with a reservation, had a 15 min wait.

The food was good. We had the meat lovers set to share.
Would have liked to have a large teapot to enjoy, I felt I bothered the waitress so much, always asking for a refill (I love my green tea).

Self cooking was fun, got to burn my meat, and chatted with my partner. Miso starter had a great taste. I just had to mention this because not all muso soups are noteworthy.

They played Kpop and other Japanese style music, which improved the atmosphere.
Dessert was a s’more, came with the set.
Great overall. Thank you.

Hei Strawberry (☆ 4/5)
Hei Strawberry (☆ 4/5)
This was a disappointing dining experience. Although the restaurant looks quite new from the outside, the interior was worn down and not well maintained. We were seated in a small overflow room near the washrooms, where the bench seating had holes and the tables were scorched all over (the photos don’t even do justice to how bad it looked in person). The place didn’t feel very clean, and the service was indifferent at best.

We ordered à la carte to try a variety of premium meats—filet mignon, Angus beef, premium kalbi, and A5 Wagyu, etc.—but most were tough and barely chewable. Portions were tiny—for instance, the $6 steamed spinach was just a bite-size. The A5 Wagyu was acceptable, while the filet mignon was the only dish that felt worth the price.

The only redeeming qualities were its easy-to-find location and that one decent dish. Unfortunately, everything else—from food quality to ambiance to service—fell short. Not recommended.

A great option for fine meat, excellent taste and plenty of options for everyone! The service is great and they are patient and explain the dishes really well! I will definitely come back next time! And it’s very fun to cook it yourself on the table!

Overall, great atmosphere. Preferred
Ordered a rice bowl with karaage, spicy cucumber and deep fried gyoza. I enjoyed the cucumber and the karaage was made well and very lightly fried. The gyoza and the rice bowl however were very mushroom forward. It’s not a taste I was necessarily expecting from Japanese food. The lettuce they served in the rice bowl was also over dressed. The dressing tasted great, but could have done with far less.
Admittedly you come here for the BBQ options so I’ll be back to try that!

I’m actually disappointed. The restaurant was on my list for quite sometime before I had a chance to come in today. I was more excited to try Shokunin because it made the Top 100 Restaurants in Canada.

The food portion was super small, and the skewers quality wasn’t the best. To be honest, I can make skewers like that at home. In addition, the wing flaps were unbelievably salty, we needed to chug our drinks right after that.

Cocktails were ok, not «Oooo I need to come back here for this» kinda feeling. With the prices I did expect something more than that.

The place is tiny but has an ok layout with overlooking kitchen and bar. Other tables don’t seem very comfortable.

Staff are all nice and professional.

Not worth the price.

Very great place. Was a bit crowded if I’m being honest, you are almost sitting shoulder to shoulder with the next table.

Food was great, really loved the variety and offerings. A bit on the pricer side though. Unfortunately, not a big deal, but our server added an egg on the rice balls we ordered which was extra charge, but we didn’t ask for it. Other than that our server was really great.

I really like the food and the ambiance ! The service from the bartender/server was excellent. Their cold shucked scalop was so good that I ordered another one . I would certainly come back again. I was impressed by their sake kasu tiramisu. It was so light and not too sweet. They gave me free nigiri with sake and a small shot of martini espresso. That was nice of the waiter. Thank you very much!

Absolutely incredible experience at Shokunin. The food was amazing, and so was the service. I can’t remember the name of our server but she was wonderful and completely non judgemental that we knew nothing about the menu (and had never had sushi or sashimi before). She was really helpful for us to decide what the right thing was for us to order.

This restaurant has quickly worked its way into one of my favourite restaurants in Calgary. I truly hope I can go again soon. It’s way too expensive for a regular thing but worth every penny. Maybe I can convince my parents to take me for my graduation, lol.

Every single item was fantastic. The cocktails were fantastic. No notes.

I originally emailed the following review directly to the restaurant since I’m not the type to complain without giving them a chance to defend themselves. 2 weeks have passed with not even a «Thanks for the feedback» reply so I’m assuming they wouldn’t mind my review to go public.

———————————-

Good afternoon,

I was dining at the restaurant last Friday night and unfortunately I did not enjoy the food and I thought to reach out to give my feedback whether or not this message will reach Chef Darren, as I’m not the type to leave a bad review without giving the restaurant a chance to respond.

The staff first and foremost were very pleasant and informative, nothing but praise for the staff. I started by ordering the cold shucked scallop, a couple nigiris and the sashimi Botan Ebi, the scallop was by far the best dish at the restaurant and I can see it at any Michelin starred tasting menu. The nigiris were good and the Botan Ebi was also good, they were nice to fry up the heads when I asked them to, as would any other sushi restaurant. It was fresh and tasty though overpriced for something you’d get for half the price at any sushi place.

I then ordered the Humboldt squid tempura and several Yakitori and one Kushiyaki, I asked my server (I believe her name was Irene) for recommendations on the Yakitori and pretty much took all her suggestions therefore, I didn’t really remember what exactly I ordered. At the end though, it didn’t really matter because all I tasted was salt and I was not able to differentiate any of the taste from one another, only textural differences. The Humboldt squid was salty but tolerable. I know we like to use the term «over-seasoned» in the industry but they are just literal salt bombs. I do like salt in my food and I understand encouraging your patrons to drink more with saltier food, but my tongue was still brined the next morning when I woke up. Needless to say, I did not finish any of the plates other than the first courses. I’ve attached a picture of the Yakitori’s that I didn’t finish to give you some background info on what I ordered.

For a $200 single seating meal (granted I did have a few drinks), unfortunately the food itself doesn’t justify the spend or to revisit / recommend. I noticed the restaurant from being fully booked days in advance just a year ago to now easily walk in and getting a table on sunny Friday night (I did make a reservation but the restaurant was not full) – perhaps there was a reason for that.

Our server was extremely friendly and offered us a variety of suggestions. The skewers themselves were with a unique sauce and cooked to perfection. We tried the skin-on thigh, heart (incredibly tender), sweetbreads, tsukune, and beef tongue, all accompanied with a soy-based egg sauce. Overall, the staff was very attentive and explained each skewer as it was served. We will definitely come back.and highly recommend for everyone.

My husband and I recently had dinner at this restaurant for Valentine’s Day! I remember this sushi joint at the farmers market before it became a restaurant. They’ve always had good and fresh sushi. However, I learned about it as a restaurant and wanted to try it again and see it was good as I remembered it, it was still very good however, I found it pricey!

Also, I always love trying the Spicy Salmon roll, every restaurant has such different ways to make it «spicy», I have a preference towards Japanese mayo and siracha. Big catch made theirs with crimson sauce which wasn’t bad just not spicy, it tasted closer to unagi sauce you get on eel rolls. We also had the Green Halo Oshi roll! It was fantastic! It was smoky and had beautiful flowers and petals sprinkled on the roll and lovely blends of spices I haven’t had on sushi before. Lastly we had the seared salmon nigiri, good and smoky!

Every server we encountered was great, water constantly refilled and attentive to our needs. We even received a free panna cotta for waiting a while for our food but we didn’t mind waiting.

The atmosphere is lovely!

The family had a craving for sushi and we were around the Chinook/Macleod Trail area so found this restaurant. It’s in a mixed use area of residential and commercial. There was plenty of parking. The place is not very big and we had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up before we were seated. The restaurant is very nicely decorated.

We ordered the Atlantic Salmon Sashimi, Albacore Tuna Sashimi, Saba Sashimi, Tropic Rush Roll, California Roll, Veggie Tempura, and House Green Salad. Everything was super fresh and tasted great. The family really enjoyed the meal.

The staff were friendly. There is a QR code that you get the menu and you can order off the site (create account) or let the staff know what you want to order. I think the restaurant is better for couples, friends, or business meetings. There was nothing wrong for our family but just the vibe and ambience I think caters to more intimate setting. Prices also were more expensive so bringing a family with big appetites could set you back. We had a great time and enjoyed the food.

We decided to host our birthday party here for a group of 7. Shibuya was very accommodating to us adding an extra seat despite being a full house at peak dinner

We love the ambience of this new location and there is plenty of parking in the strip mall.

Food was delicious and the fish quality was so delicate and fresh. They even gave us a couple complimentary rolls for our birthdays.
The hand rolls are a new addition from their old menu and it was a great fish to rice ratio, would recommend that these are eaten immediately so that the seaweed stays crunchy when you bite into it.

Service was fine, our servers were friendly and explained each piece in our sushi platter and our teas and waters were consistently refilled. We did initially had some drinks missed but they immediately brought it to us when we told them

After we finished eating, they bought out our cake for us and even sang us happy birthday. We sat there chatting and never felt pressured to leave and even kept topping up our teas and water.

Overall, we’re happy to support this local and family run restaurant and can’t wait to return.

Ordered:
-Deluxe treasure set
-Saba (grilled mackerel)
-Creamy udon
-Beef tataki

Absolutely loved this place! The sushi was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. You can tell they really care about quality and customer experience. Definitely one of the best sushi spots I’ve been to — I’ll be coming back for sure!

The restaurant has a good ambiance and the staff were so courteous. The food was delicious and will definitely visit again. We loved the beef tataki. I ended up forgetting my cell phone at the restaurant and the staff kept it safe and returned it when I came back to pick it. Kudos to staff this evening extra star for them.

Best beef tataki in town! We also really loved the handrolls, the salmond hand roll came with a huge piexe of fish so I thought it was well worth the price. Great modern interior and everything feels so clean, especially the bathrooms. Slowly becoming one of our favorite sushi spots 🙂

We visited Friday night for their soft opening at the new location. The restaurant wasn’t too busy—just a handful of occupied tables—but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing.

When we arrived, there were already two other people waiting, but despite having plenty of staff, no one was at the front to greet or seat guests. We also had to wait for some time before getting a table, which was surprising given the light crowd.

Once seated, the service felt mediocre and very limited, especially since orders are placed through a QR code system. While convenient, this meant that staff interaction was minimal—and when we did have questions, the responses weren’t helpful.

For example, we asked if we could each order on our own phones and have everything combined onto one bill. Instead of a clear answer, we got «Oh, I don’t know, let me ask» or «I’m not sure.» You’d expect staff to be well-informed about the ordering system, especially on opening night.

Another issue was how they bussed finished plates. Instead of politely asking, servers would simply walk up and say, «Are you done?» The overall mannerisms of some employees felt unprofessional and lacked attentiveness. No one checked in on us throughout the meal, which seemed odd for a soft opening where gathering customer feedback should be a priority.

The food was decent but overall not worth the price in terms of quality and portion size. There are better sushi spots in Calgary that offer better value and quality.
• Salmon sashimi didn’t taste very fresh and had a similar texture to Costco fillets, which was disappointing.
• Philly Fly Roll had very minimal cream cheese—if you’re going to have «Philly» in the name, the cream cheese shouldn’t be lacking.
• Beef tataki was good, one of the better items we had.
• California Outside Roll wasn’t the same as before. They used to have decent chunks of imitation crab, but now everything is minced, making it much less enjoyable.
• Rolls were large in size, but the rice-to-fish ratio was way off—too much rice, not enough fish. Even their house special roll was mostly cucumber and rice with very minimal fish.
• Creamy udon was disappointing. The portion size was small for the price, and considering the ingredients used, it didn’t feel worth it. Sometimes I crave creamy udon, which is why we decided to give Shibuya a try, but after this experience, I might just make it at home myself. I can save some money and feel more satisfied with the results.

Since payment is also done through the QR code, the overall service experience was minimal. For a soft opening, we expected more effort from the staff in ensuring customers were happy and that everything was running smoothly. Given that the restaurant wasn’t even busy and had at least five FOH staff, there wasn’t really an excuse for the lack of attentiveness.

Based on our Friday night experience, I’m not sure if we’ll be returning anytime soon. There are better sushi spots in Calgary that offer better service, quality, and value.

– response to –
It’s clear that you don’t take constructive criticism well, but I’ll reiterate my experience. Staff ignored guests waiting at the entrance when a simple ‘Someone will be with you shortly’ would have made a difference. Service was noticeably better for certain tables, and we weren’t even offered a paper menu—just handed a QR code with no explanation.

Fresh salmon shouldn’t have a strong fishy smell, and the house special roll had more rice and cucumber than actual fish. The bill mix-up at the end was unacceptable—you gave us another table’s bill, and they got ours. If they had paid and left, then what?

There were empty tables when we arrived, yet people waited so long that one woman had to sit inside a booth just to be seated. That’s not a space issue—that’s poor efficiency.

It’s disappointing that rather than acknowledging these issues, you dismiss any review that isn’t completely positive. A business that refuses to listen to feedback doesn’t improve—it just loses returning customers.

I am so grateful for the new location which is only 10 min away from my House. Foods and services are superb. They know how to deal with small children. Staff try to communicate children constantly with smile and my 4 years old behaved nicely.

We were there for the Mother’s Day weekend and had a wonderful experience. The food was amazing as usual. The staff was attentive and quick to respond to our requests despite the very busy dinner time.

I noticed they made a change to nigiri sushi order quantity from 1 piece to 2 pieces per order now, but everything still tasted fresh and quality remained top notch.

Their Japanese style beef tataki is the best in the city (how I missed this dish!). The beef is tender and thinly sliced with a delicious blend of ponzu sauce and dried garlic pieces. Highly recommend this dish.

The grilled miso black cod melts in your mouth.

The assorted tempura had the right amount of batter and fried to perfection.

We are so thankful this local favourite is back. Their new location has better parking space, which is a bonus.

Thanks to my new friend My for introducing me to Ryuko and their Omakase lunch. The food was superb and so was our chef and the service. I had previously been to this location when it was a pub and I was delighted to see how much the decor has been changed. The ambiance is great and I would highly recommend this place for Japanese food.

Phenomenal food. Each dish was amazing. We sat at the sushi bar, the sous chef was extremely polite and everyone seemed to really like working there.

Food came at the perfect pace. My wife’s cocktail was the best drink she has ever had (velvet kiss). We will be back and we will bring more friends next time!

This has quickly become my wife and I’s favourite date night spot. The service has always been excellent, and the staff have always gone out of their way to accommodate us and our baby. The food has also been excellent, and well priced. Their tempura is delicious, and everything else off of their menu so far has been great. Portions have also always been good, we leave stuffed each time!

I really appreciate the pictures on the menu My party of four got Course C and everything was delicious! My personal favourite was the salmon & hamachi carpaccio ⭐️

Despite being told that our food might take awhile because of how much we ordered and how busy the restaurant was, we got our food surprisingly quick!!

Danny is the real GOAT! Very charismatic, personable and he took some great pictures of our group.

The restaurant is somehow both cozy and modern. Very nice

Ryuko in South Calgary completely exceeded my expectations, even as someone with a shellfish allergy and a tendency to be picky about seafood-heavy restaurants. From the moment I arrived, the experience was unique—the house-like exterior added a warm and inviting touch to the drive-up. Once inside, I was welcomed with genuine hospitality and seated comfortably.

Despite my reservations about seafood-focused menus, the food was absolutely amazing. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, accommodating my allergy without compromising on flavor. The attention to detail and quality ingredients really stood out, making it a dining experience I thoroughly enjoyed. Whether you have dietary concerns or not, I highly recommend Ryuko for its incredible food, welcoming atmosphere, and distinctive charm.

My wife and I stopped in here today and were blown away! All aspects of our impromptu lunch date were amazing. The food was phenomenal, the ramen was the absolute best! Started off with the «Rock n Shrimp» which was some of the best shrimp I’ve ever had!
We shared the Black Fuji Tonkotsu ramen which they split into two bowls for us with no hastle! It was rich and creamy and just so so so good!
We also split a few of their deep fried sushi rolls too which were also top tier sushi.

I am pretty sure the co-owner, Maria was serving us! She took great care of us and ensured everything was perfect!

My only regret was not trying this place sooner!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Best Japanese Restaurant in Calgary

Fuji Ramen and Sushi Calgary is exceptional. The sashimi was unbelievably fresh and expertly cut, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich, clean flavor. Each piece was delicate yet bursting with freshness, the kind of quality that’s hard to find even in top spots in Vancouver and Toronto. The fried Cajun shrimp sushi had the perfect crispness and depth of flavor. The wagyu sushi was melt-in-your-mouth tender with a buttery richness that lingered beautifully. The spicy salmon was balanced with just the right amount of heat and freshness. The mango salad stood out with vibrant flavors and perfectly ripe avocado. The fried mango dessert was crisp on the outside, soft inside, and not overly sweet, the perfect finish.

Maria, the owner, is clearly passionate about her craft. Her attention to detail and commitment to quality come through in every dish. Fuji Ramen and Sushi sets the standard for Japanese cuisine in Calgary. Highly recommended.

When we arrived at Fuji Ramen and Sushi, the waiter greeted us and said there were no tables available. However, I asked if we could sit at the bar counter for six people, and they agreed. Overall great. Busy place.
Sushi delicious. Mango ice cream was delicious too.
Some notes:
The Wagyu, it was good but not «melt in your mouth» kind of good.
Our wagyu was way too chewy and to be honest, we wouldnt order it again.
Our server was nice however we had to ask her for items such as plates, more water, little things like that, which when you have the food in front of you, it puts a little stall.

Extremely overrated! Ramen is not cooked very well and the noodles are sticking together. The soup of Ramen is supposed clear pork broth but it came out dark soy soup. The Caterpillar Roll is the slimmest caterpillar I have ever seen in Western Canada; the deep fried shrimp is not crispy and the avocado is not fresh. The services are poor.

First time visiting Carino and undeniably worth the wait! I wasn’t sure about going because of my egg allergy; Italian & Japanese food usually equals eggs but we thought we’d investigate.

The entire menu will make your mouth water just reading it, plus they have specials!! I’m not sure & I forgot to ask how often the specials change, but my partner had the Carbonera (he can eat eggs) and would definitely recommend it. We also ordered the adorably delicious Momo’s that were an appetizer special, and I truly could have just had a dish of that for myself!! They are out of this world, major flavour bombs!! I’ve never eaten something so slowly, because I didn’t want it to be over!

I ordered the Bucatini with Wagyu Meat Sauce, Parmesan Cheese & Truffle Oil for my main course and if that is all I could eat for the rest of time, it would be the best news!! Truffle & Wagyu, what more can I say?!?! So savoury, delightful, and comforting; I took some to-go, just so I could have it again the next day!!

Josh was our server and he was so kind & attentive plus the care he took to ensure I was ok the eat items wrt to my allergy was amazing. I truly appreciate the time he took going to ask the kitchen, multiple times. Josh also happens to be a tea sommelier and we were treated to his wealth of knowledge and subsequently an incredible pot of tea! A wonderful end to our amazing evening, even if it meant we were the last ones in the restaurant!

Toshi Karino & Head Chef, Resham Giri have a gem of a restaurant in Mission, Italian + Japanese = ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you!

Came here to celebrate my husband’s birthday and this restaurant did not disappoint. Decor and ambiance were very fun and trendy, and the dining area was super lively. The servers are incredibly knowledgeable and were highly attentive to our dietary restrictions (allergies). We had the momos (chicken and veg), gyozagna, and tonkatsu with curry and carbonara. Each dish was excellent and we loved the creative twists on classic dishes. My only regret is not having enough room for dessert! We will definitely be back in the near future.

This was our second time eating here, but I wanted to treat my mom for her birthday. The prices are high but the food quality makes it worth it -everything was delicious! Even my dad who can be a fussy eater also enjoyed his ramen. Our only wish was that the chicken karaage portion was bigger. We also ordered the house specials, momos, and gyozagna

We were absolutely blown away by our experience here.

I want to start by giving a shoutout to our server, Josh, who was absolutely amazing and made our whole night. Josh is tea expert who provided us with a fantastic education on tea and provided us with tea pairing recommendations for our meal. Josh’s demeanor was upbeat and really made us feel comfortable.

Customer Reviews
Really enjoyed our visit! The pork broth was rich and flavorful and really hit the spot on a cold winter day. We also enjoyed the chicken and beef skewers that we tried. I did feel the beef was just slightly overdone and the portion of pork in the ramen was a bit skimpy. Other than that the food was great.

Service was prompt and friendly and it’s a fun atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

Disappointing visit if you expect authenticity. In the menu the mackerel appears grilled over charcoal but in reality it’s fried in a pan or on a stovetop. The yakitori has zero char and I suspect it’s precooked and just covered in tare sauce. Sushi rice has acceptable taste but the texture was poor and not sushi rice.

This place was a fun restaurant and I would return. The service was excellent and prompt. I enjoyed the interior decor and there was a lot of space. It seemed all of the large staff was from Japan. There is a small store with various delights. They had a large variety of food. The ramen had tasty broth and noodles, but the portion of pork was very small and under seasoned.

The only thing other than the pork to improve was that it had fairly loud music that didn’t fit the ambiance.

The prices were reasonable and they have a special each night of the week and a lunch special on ramen without meat for $8.50.

We traveled over 800 miles to visit Calgary, and IKUSA Izakaya & Tokyo Market delivered the best meal of our entire trip. Every single dish was flawless—from the two perfectly crafted rolls to the sizzling steak hot plate and the light, crispy shrimp tempura. The flavors were bold, fresh, and unforgettable.

What truly set this experience apart, though, was the service. Evelyn was an outstanding server—warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. Even the host went out of their way to make us feel welcome and taken care of. We hope to be back someday!

Ramen
The lunch special ramen, priced at $8.50, is served with half a tamago egg, seaweed, and green onions. I highly recommend the black tonkotsu ramen, which offers a well-balanced flavor profile that is not overly salty, with a generous portion perfect for one person.

Rolls
Lobster Roll: 10/10. Consistently excellent, as always.
Mango Roll: 10/10. A delightful and refreshing choice, perfectly executed.

Yakitori
Beef Tongue: 5/10. While tender and juicy, I personally prefer thinner slices. I would also recommend an extra grilling for added texture.
Unagi: 10/10. A standout favorite, consistently delicious.
Teriyaki Chicken Skewer: 10/10. Perfectly cooked with a great balance of flavor.
Prime Rib: 10/10. A truly satisfying dish, cooked to perfection.

UPDATE: Ordered spicy salmon roll platter off Uber Eats and we definitely received old sushi that’s gone bad. Not only is the smell a big giveaway but one taste was enough to throw it out, it was so stale. Wasted nearly $50 worth of sushi. So disappointing considering we order from here all the time 🙁

Think I’ve just found one of my new fav sushi places Not only did the decor and atmosphere capture the Japanese street vibe, but oh my god the FOOD. Everything I took a bite of seemed to just melt in my mouth, it was that good.

We went with a large group and the service was fantastic, with not much waiting time and they were happy to split our complicated bills with no trouble. I tried their truffle prawn roll, seared salmon oshi, bluefin tuna, p-toro (pork belly) shiso yaki (chicken thigh) and prawn tempura — everything was hands down 10/10.

The sushi were easily the standouts, packed with flavor and high quality fish, and at a crazy good price compared to most places’ special rolls. Other items like the chicken teriyaki, ginger shrimp, gyu angus and volcano rolls were also delicious.

I’m already planning my next trip back!

Frequently Asked Questions about Japanese Restaurants in Calgary

What types of Japanese cuisine can I find in Calgary?

Calgary offers a diverse range of Japanese cuisine. You can find everything from traditional sushi and sashimi to ramen, tempura, yakitori, and okonomiyaki. Some restaurants specialize in a particular style, while others offer a broader menu. Exploring beyond sushi will reveal unique and delicious dishes.

How do I find authentic Japanese food in Calgary?

Identifying authentic Japanese food often involves researching restaurants with a strong reputation amongst the Japanese community. Reading online reviews, paying attention to the restaurant’s ambiance and decor, and observing the staff's expertise can be indicators. Some restaurants are operated by Japanese chefs and families, which often signifies traditional cooking methods.

What’s the difference between sushi and sashimi?

While both involve raw fish, there’s a key distinction. Sushi is rice prepared with vinegar and formed with other ingredients like vegetables and fish. Sashimi is simply thinly sliced raw fish or meat served without rice. Many restaurants offer both on their menus, and experiencing the difference is an excellent way to explore Japanese flavors.

What are some common etiquette tips when dining at a Japanese restaurant?

Understanding Japanese dining etiquette shows respect for the culture and restaurant. It's polite to wait until the host or server invites you to begin eating. Use your chopsticks correctly – don't stick them upright in your rice. Avoid rubbing your chopsticks together, as it implies the quality is poor. Slurping ramen can be a sign of enjoyment.

What does "omakase" mean, and should I try it?

Omakase (お任せ) translates to "I’m leaving it to you." When ordering omakase at a sushi restaurant, you're allowing the chef to choose the selection of sushi for you. This provides a unique opportunity to try seasonal and specialty items that may not be on the standard menu. It's a good choice for those who want an adventurous dining experience.

Are there options for those with dietary restrictions, like gluten-free or vegetarian?

Many Japanese restaurants in Calgary are becoming increasingly accommodating to dietary restrictions. While traditional soy sauce contains gluten, gluten-free alternatives are often available. Vegetarian options like vegetable tempura, shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), and tofu-based dishes can be found. It’s always best to inquire with the restaurant beforehand.

What is the price range for Japanese restaurants in Calgary?

The price range for Japanese restaurants can vary significantly. Casual ramen shops and smaller sushi counters often have more affordable options, while high-end sushi restaurants offering omakase experiences can be quite expensive. Expect to pay anywhere from $15 for a bowl of ramen to over $100 per person for an omakase meal.

What are some popular ramen toppings and what do they signify?

Ramen toppings add flavor and texture to the dish. Ajitama (soft-boiled marinated egg) represents richness and umami. Chashu (braised pork belly) adds savory depth. Menma (fermented bamboo shoots) contribute a crunchy and tangy element. Negi (green onions) offer freshness. Understanding these elements enhances appreciation of the dish.

What's the best way to handle chopsticks if I'm not used to using them?

Using chopsticks can feel awkward at first, but with a little practice, it becomes easier. Hold the chopsticks close to the top, using your thumb and index finger. Avoid crossing the chopsticks or stabbing food. Don't be afraid to ask for a fork if you're struggling. Many restaurants are understanding of those unfamiliar with chopsticks.

Can I order takeout or delivery from Japanese restaurants in Calgary?

Yes, most Japanese restaurants in Calgary offer takeout and delivery options. Many partner with third-party delivery services to extend their reach. This is a convenient way to enjoy Japanese cuisine at home. Check the restaurant's website or delivery app for availability and ordering details.
