Elite has been an amazing experience. We signed up our daughter for Muay Thai and she is loving it. Nikki has amazing at helping us get all set up and following up. Logan has been absolutely fantastic with our daughter and such a great coach with all the kids. We have already recommended Elite to our friends.
Curt U (☆ 5/5)

We tried the 2 free trial classes at the Shepard location with my Son in the kids parented class and my Daughter in the Teens class. Logan and Betty were really friendly and encouraging coaches. It wasn’t intimidating at all to jump in even though we had no prior experience at all. I really appreciated that Logan makes an effort to know all the kids names and involve them all in the class. The second Teens class was really busy and I noticed the adult coaches jumped in to help out. Seems like a really great atmosphere. Nikki was also a great help, answering my many questions over email and coordinating the whole process. Both kids decided to sign up.
Paul Leeder (☆ 5/5)

I signed my 6 year old son up for classes at Elite and ended up signing myself up shortly after because of how fun the classes looked! The children’s classes are fantastic, my son loves them and has gained so much confidence and love for Muay Thai. All of the instructors are incredibly welcoming and skilled, making it a great experience for both kids and adults. Highly recommend!
Kara Hazenberg (☆ 5/5)

Coach Betty is absolutely amazing! She’s incredibly patient and kind with the children. Her teaching style is engaging and fun, which keeps the kids excited to learn every week. You can tell she genuinely cares and puts a lot of thought into making each class enjoyable and meaningful. We feel so lucky to have her as our Muay Thai coach!
Kelly Elm (☆ 5/5)

This place has the best customer service (Nikki is amazing), best pricing, and quality of classes. If you’re looking for an interactive class, look no further. My son did the trial classes, and there was no time for him just to sit around. I love the parental involvement in class. Coach Logan is very friendly, very kind, and he knows how to work with kids. He also has an assistant, so no kids will be left with no instructions. After the 2nd trial class, I asked my son if he enjoyed it, and he said «I want to come here everytime this place is open!» That’s how much he loves the class, and this is his first time doing any martial arts training. Love it!
N N (☆ 5/5)

We decided on Elite Martial Arts Academy after an extensive google search, reading all the reviews and speaking with Nikki the choice was easy. My son is special needs and they are very accommodating and helpful in teaching and ensuring that he feels included. We tried our first class this weekend and felt very welcomed the minute we walked in the door. My son is one to usually sit on the sidelines until he is comfortable enough to start interacting. Betty was amazing at getting him to join in right away. The smiles on his face the entire time and the laughter was all I needed to know we were in the right place. I love that this is a parent involved class as well.
Evelyn Evans (☆ 5/5)

This place is top notch! Our kids have been training since the beginning of the year in group classes and on a one on one basis with Logan and Kevin at the Sheppard location and they are both loving it! Both instructors are well trained and keep the kids engaged and having fun while also getting a good sweat on. Definitely recommend!

Im a black belt bjj instructor/coach from Philadelphia. I was in Calgary to visit family and was looking for a place to train while I was in town. Coach Avery at the Varsity location was very welcoming and I had a great time training there. The instruction is top-notch and the facility was great. Would definitely recommend.

I was just passing through Calgary when I decided to spend the little time I had doing Jiu Jitsu here. Met some really welcoming people, had good rolls, and the coaches were more than willing to teach me a thing or two. 100% worth it.
Jerry (☆ 5/5)

I did a drop-in class today, everyone I met was super friendly and I had some fun rolls. I really enjoyed the style of instruction. I listen to the BJJ Mental Models podcast and it was really cool to experience a class focused on Rob Biernacki’s concept of Alignment. I will definitely come visit again.

My children have been attending Affinity Academy since April 2022, and from day one, it’s been nothing short of fantastic! They absolutely adored their classes. The dedication and passion of both the staff and the coaches truly shine through, thanks to their amazing support and encouragement. It’s clear that the entire team is committed to providing an outstanding educational experience.Thank you, Affinity Academy, for making such a positive impact on my children’s lives!

I went to Affinity while I was visiting Calgary. The instructors were wonderful, and the other students were welcoming, and great to train with. As a woman, it can be very intimidating going to a martial arts gym, but I would absolutely recommend Affinity to any woman that would like to give BJJ, or kickboxing, a try. I can’t say enough good things about them.

AWESOME PEOPLE!!!
Nikki is amazing! She’s been incredibly helpful in answering all my questions about memberships and trial sessions for my kids. She’s so kind and always responds to my inquiries promptly.
Jason is fantastic! He greeted us with a warm welcome and is clearly a knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced instructor. From what I’ve seen, he goes above and beyond to make sure my kids feel like they belong. He paired them with more experienced members who guided and mentored them during their trial days, which my kids truly appreciated.
Everyone at the gym is wonderful—staff, parents, and members alike. The people here are incredibly kind and positive!
Loreto Torres (☆ 5/5)

First came to this place because it’s right next to my workplace to try and get fit. But I found it to be super fun to learn Muay Thai so I ended up sticking around. The coaches are super nice and they teach in a very easy to understand way. The physical requirement is a bit steep but over all very beginner friendly.
Meloeter (☆ 5/5)

All my kids spent 5 years here, amazing teaching and teachers. Definitely a place to go to if you’re looking to study Teens Muay Thai.
Hoang Duong Vu (☆ 5/5)

My daughter and her friend have done 2 trial classes and LOVED them. Great coach, he really gets them going. They have started there membership today (Monday) for 2 days a week. When there finished class there attitudes are awsome and there so excited for them next class
I can’t wait to see them improve and learn new skills.
Kathleen Dorward (☆ 5/5)

We have attended two trial classes for my son. They have been so accommodating with his special needs. The teachers are awesome. And the administration that I have been in communication with through email has gone above and beyond. Her name is Nikki and she has been an absolute pleasure to deal with. She has given me so much reassurance and encouragement. We have really loved our experience so far. I would recommend to everyone to join. Great for developing athletic skills, dedication and social interaction!

We have been so pleased with the welcoming and supportive atmosphere at Elite. Their kids 4-6 year old program is wonderful. Betty is supportive & encouraging.
Stephanie Hornick (☆ 5/5)

Coming from a traditional martial arts background, not having trained in a long time, I was looking for a place to maybe start back training in a different format. I also wanted to introduce some activity for my daughter. I reached out the to academy and had a very pleasant, personal, and professional response. I signed my daughter for the youth trial classes and she very much enjoyed them. I also enjoyed working with her as part of the parent participation. We had excellent follow-up from the academy and felt comfortable there. There was no pressure and no egos. The instructor met the students where they are at without any judgement. I am looking forward to signing us both up!

A great gym to train at. As someone who trains for fitness and self defence—and not to go pro—I can say the gym caters to all levels. The environment fostered here is very safe and friendly, yet also has the coaching staff to allow you to go farther and to the pros if that’s something you desire. The coaches also do a great job at making everyone feel like they belong. As a Sikh man with a turban, I’ve never felt othered by any of the coaches or staff, and genuinely feel welcome in the space. Price is also very fair for the amount and quality of training you will receive. The lack of contracts is another great plus, and they even allow for pauses in membership if you’re unable to attend for an extended amount of time. I’d recommend this gym to anyone, whether you’re trying to get fit, learn self-defence skills, add to your workout regime, or fight professionally.
Arjan Singh (☆ 5/5)

This was my son’s first time attending summer camp at Champions Creed, and I can’t say enough good things about it! From the moment we signed up, everything was smooth and well-organized. Before the camp started, I was impressed by the clear and detailed communication. Parents received an agenda outlining each day’s activities, and text reminders for special activities like swimming. The ability to text message the staff with questions was a bonus for me and no other camp has done similar.
My son had an amazing time, and it’s all thanks to the wonderful staff. According to him, the counselors were fair but firm, and above all, they were fun.
I want to give a special thanks to Jen, who was always responsive and helpful with any questions I had. PJ also deserves a shout-out—he was professional, mature, and took the time to answer all of my questions. My son also mentioned how nice PJ was. And of course, the incredible coaches—Landon, Nick, and JJ—were fantastic with the kids.
One thing I really liked was the excellent staff-to-child ratio. It gave me peace of mind, especially during the swimming outings, knowing that the kids were well-supervised.
Overall, this was one of our best camp experiences after trying several others around the city. I’ll definitely be booking more weeks next year and highly recommend Champions Creed to any parent looking for a great summer camp.
S T (☆ 5/5)

My son loves the big champs program!
He’s excited to go and see his coaches and get out all of his pent up energy! I love that you have the option to bring the kids in every day at the same time if you wanted to! When my littler kids are old enough we will be enrolling them as well.
Friendly staff and love watching the confidence grow
Lyss Tetley (☆ 5/5)

I’ve been training at Champion’s Creed for about 4 years now, and it’s by far the best gym I’ve trained at in the city. World-class coaching, great training partners, and many opportunities for learning and growth. I would and have recommended it to anyone who’s thinking about training martial arts.
Brayden Smith (☆ 5/5)

Not the most hygienic place out there. They cram almost 100 people with bad hygiene in a small area and they all sweat on each other. Told my buddy to stay away from this gym, but he didn’t and ended up with really bad skin infection. Although they probably clean the mats everyday, the place is still extremely dirty. If you don’t want ringworm and staph infection stay away.
Happy Hive (☆ 1/5)

I did Champions Rise 5 month MMA training camp. It was a best jump start to, I hope, a lifelong love of martial arts. The team there is absolutely stellar. You have the best skilled individuals working their hardest pushing you furthest. You do feel, look and have the confidence of a real fighter by the end.
A chance to be in the cage fighting your first mma fight with crowds cheering is a cherry on top. This is an experience of a lifetime. Don’t miss out, I promise – just seeing your own progress alone is so worth it
Anastasiya Sivkova (☆ 5/5)

Want to learn martial arts. Maybe just get in a great workout. These guys can get you sweating AND have you learn something new. I was a beginner but they also train very experienced martial artists. Location is great and full of interesting… everything. Equipment. Photos and miscellaneous stuff.

My Duaghter, 5 years old, and my Son, 4 years old, have been attending straight Blast Gym for over a month now. My main reasons for them getting into jiu-jitsu was, I wanted them to learn self confidence, self respect, respect for others and learn how to be in a team. Well, after a few classes to get comfortable with the other kids, I see the change not only in class but also at home. Mike and Becca really know thier craft and to top it, they know how to teach the kids. The kids instantly respected Mike and Becca because they know how to make learning jiu-jitsu so much fun. I would like to thank you Two for doing what you guys do, Bella and Hamoody love attending and I hope they will for years to come.
And for the older folks. I watch those sessions go on, and I have to say, I was highly impressed. If my work schedule wasn’t insane, I would join in a heart beat.
I would highly recommend anyone to try Straight Blast.
Thanks Mike&Becca, you guys rock

My son Theo has been going since September. He started at 4, and quickly picked up what coach Becca taught him. He’s now in the 5-6 class. It’s challenging, and he enjoys it so much.
Coach Becca and coach Mike are amazing when it comes to the balance between fun and concentration. The high repeat of students also show how much they enjoy the classes. No one is as brutally honest as kids!
It’s a free trail, so why not give it a try!?!

We joined this school in September 2023, for my 7 year old daughter who wanted to do something different than gymnastics. In 6 months she has achieved Orange belt and she is looking forward to acquiring the Black belt :). With the guidance and encouragement from the masters this goal is not out of reach. It is amazing to see how much more confident the kids become and how much their attitude improves. I have only great words towards the masters as they are very skilled and patient instructors. I 100% recommend this school.

Professor Ben is an absolute class act! Teammates at this gym are something to admire as well, as Jiu Jitsu is an intense activity, everyone at the gym understands control and technicality as this is what is drilled into the students and in turn, it ensures the safety of everyone. The moment you enter Authentic, you are welcomed into a very friendly and supportive environment. Do not hesitate to step foot into the doors of this amazing gym, be it you’re a beginner or have a background in martial arts, there is space for you on the mats!

This a a great gym to train at. They have a tight-knit but welcoming community: members go out of their way to make you feel at ease in what can be an intimidating environment– considering the technicality and intensity of the sport. The facility is clean af which is seriously appreciated given the context.

Can’t thank Prof. Ben and all of the coaches at Authentic Jiu Jitsu enough for sharing their gifts and knowledge. My oldest son has been going for almost two years, my youngest son has been going for almost a year and now I’ve started to train. The skills and discipline you get here are second to none. The way they teach goes hand in hand with their patience. They make everyone feel welcomed and train all levels with the same consistency. If you’re interested in training in Jiu Jitsu or if you want a safe and healthy way to stay in shape I would definitely recommend checking out AJJ.
tinh thai (☆ 5/5)

This is easily the best gym I’ve trained. Ben is super knowledgeable and patient during class and pays attention to the students learning. He is fair in class, and pushes the students to be their best. There is a good variety of white belts and colored, which is essential in my mind for a gym. The atmosphere is really good here, and the students and coaches are very respectful. This gym is definitely worth checking out if you want to get into BJJ or switch gyms.

100% Recommended to anyone who wants to get their non-restricted and restricted PAL License.
Incredible instructors, Sanjay’s theory class was excellent, filled with precise knowledge and stories from his personal experience, Elisa’s practical firearm handling is exceptional, to-the-point, easy to follow.
Highest level of safety is followed in each class, and it’s intuitive and easy to remember.
Kuldeep Singh (☆ 5/5)

Absolutely the best place to take your non-restricted and restricted PAL courses.
The most knowledgeable and highly trained instructors I have ever come across and the most advanced facility.
The instructors are amazing and really go above and beyond to teach firearms safety not to mention that they also have the facility to train you how to shoot properly!!!
Everything they offer is so complementary.
It shouldn’t even be a question – use them!
D Perzan (☆ 5/5)

I took the PAL and RPAL course with ITTA and also did the fundamental shoot course for both rifle and handgun. Great place and even better people. I cannot recommend them enough, I can’t wait to sign up for more courses with them!
Kevin Beal (☆ 5/5)

I originally took my r-pal course here back in 2021. Shortly after taking the course I signed up for the CQC (close quarter combat) program and have been consistently attending since. The experience of the instructors and staff is exceedingly exceptional. I wouldn’t even consider stepping into another range. Even though ITTA is a business it sure feels more like a tight knit family. A huge thank you to Orlando, Elisa, and the entire team. I sure am looking forward to the many years ahead of us.
Robert Campbell (☆ 5/5)

Elisa and Sanjay were great. Took the PAL and RPAL courses and had a great time. Very thorough class and the exams were not sweat.
PS; make sure you have socks, the course is upstairs and outside shoes are not permitted!
Brady Bullock (☆ 5/5)

Amazing experience. The instructors made difficult information easy to understand, and the training was some of the best I have ever had. I would definitely recommend getting your PAL certification here! — I came in with absolutely zero knowledge and left feeling confident and excited to learn more. The teaching style is perfect for multi-modal learners who are more kinesthetic in nature. Highly recommend!
Alexis D (☆ 5/5)

These guys are one of the best trainers in the province! With a beautiful class room and awesome staff! The course was very informative and the team definitely knows what they are talking about! I would definitely recommend anyone needing their gun license restricted or non restricted to get in touch and sign up because you are not going to get anothee teacher like Orlando! Smart, efficient and super knowledgeable! I’ll definitely be sending the rest of my family and friends here! Thanks again!

The instructors are exceptional – dedicated professionals who truly care about each student’s development. Kennet stands out particularly, his determination to help every child learn and improve is remarkable. The children support each other like a true team, celebrating each other’s progress and encouraging improvement. This collaborative spirit creates an environment where everyone continuously develops their abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions about Martial Arts Centers in Calgary
What are the most common martial arts styles taught in Calgary?
Calgary martial arts centers frequently offer instruction in a range of styles. Some of the most popular options include Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Each style has its unique philosophy, techniques, and training methods, catering to diverse interests and fitness goals.
How do I choose the right martial arts center for me?
Selecting the right center involves careful consideration. First, identify your goals – are you seeking self-defense skills, fitness improvement, discipline, or a combination? Then, research centers offering styles that align with these goals. Look for a center with qualified instructors, a positive atmosphere, and a curriculum that suits your skill level.
What is the typical cost of martial arts training in Calgary?
The cost of training can vary significantly based on the style, the center's reputation, and the type of membership you choose. Generally, expect monthly fees ranging from $80 to $250 or more. Some centers also charge registration fees, equipment costs, or testing fees. It’s best to inquire about all costs upfront to avoid surprises.
What age groups are typically served by martial arts centers?
Most centers offer programs for a wide range of age groups, from young children to adults. Many have specialized programs for kids, teens, and adults, often with tailored instruction and curriculum. Some centers also offer family classes where parents and children can train together. Checking the center’s program offerings is important.
What equipment do I need to get started?
The required equipment usually depends on the martial art style. Typically, you'll need comfortable athletic wear, a water bottle, and athletic shoes. As you progress, the center may require you to purchase a uniform (gi), gloves, a mouthguard, or other specialized gear. The center will usually advise you on what is needed.

Martial arts offer a wealth of benefits extending far beyond self-defense. These include improved physical fitness, increased self-esteem, enhanced mental focus, greater self-discipline, stress reduction, and a sense of community. The training often promotes a healthy lifestyle.
What should I look for in a qualified martial arts instructor?
A qualified instructor should have extensive experience and expertise in their chosen style, a clear understanding of teaching principles, and a commitment to student development. They should be able to communicate effectively, provide constructive feedback, and create a safe and supportive learning environment. Consider their credentials and certifications.
Is there a trial period or introductory class available?
Many centers understand that potential students want to try before committing. A significant number offer a free introductory class or a short trial period. This allows you to experience the center's environment, meet the instructors, and see if the style and training approach are a good fit for you.
