I was looking for some legal assistance with a civil matter and called this firm to help me draft a cease & desist letter. Over the phone I’ve been told that it would be $375 (+ GST) for a consultation and 1-2-3 hours of lawyer time to make a letter, depending on the case. Person on the phone assured me that they have a lawyer who is experienced with situations like mine, which could be true. I also had another quote of $1.5k for the same service from another firm, but I went ahead with O&S after seeing good reviews and ballparking the potential price.

The lawyer that I spoke to was knowledgeable, however I didn’t hear anything new to be honest. Then he said that a retainer fee would be 5k$. Quite the difference compared to what I heard over the phone, unless they’re charging 1.5-2.5k$ per hour. I think I’ll pass.

From the first phone call to the closing of our refinance and land title change with Kahane Law Office, it was an amazing experience! The entire team, but especially our paralegal Anne, was incredibly efficient and knowledgeable throughout our transaction. It was such a smooth and positive experience that I couldn’t be anymore grateful. Honestly, this team was the best to work with and I highly recommend them!

Going with this firm cost me $250 out of pocket due to delays in closing my real estate transaction.

Throughout the process, I had to follow up to ensure next steps were happening. The paralegals sent the same emails multiple times, which caused confusion. On the day of closing, my mortgage agent flagged that the necessary documentation had not been received. When I contacted the law office urgently, I was told to email instead of receiving immediate assistance.

As a result, the closing was delayed by one day, which incurred additional costs for me. When I raised my concerns, the firm’s owner, Jeff, defended their position, even though the facts did not align. They had requested documents by a specific date, and my courier provided a timestamped delivery well within that window, yet I was still accused of being late.

Since Jeff has responded publicly, I want to share an important update. Below is a verbatim quote from the paralegal regarding the interest charges I incurred:

«As for the interest that was paid, after we received registration in your names, we had requested the funds in ample time from [Bank], but the mortgage did not fund to our trust account in time.»

The instructions were faxed over, but no follow-up took place. The bank later requested additional documentation, and my mortgage agent—not the law firm—had to push the urgency through me. A lack of verification or follow-up from the firm, especially on closing day, is a major concern.

I am not seeking a refund, but I want to share my experience so that others are aware. If you are out of province, be mindful—perhaps their service is better for local clients.

My «lawyer», Jasneet Malhi, was my lawyer for an entire year before she lost very, very sensitive information I trusted her with. I asked to see my documents that I faxed her a year ago because she’s asking for the same documents again without doing anything in the meantime. She says I threatened her!! With what?! And despite her being my lawyer for a year, she’s never met me. There were many different ways to handle that. Nonetheless, I will pursue with FOIP.
So, if you want to be ignored, and you want to add some extra headache to your already turbulent family matter, choose Stonetree Law.

Initial contact with Stonetree regarding probate and it went well. I assembled the documents they needed and recontacted them. A week later I hadn’t heard back from them so I called them. Told they were checking for potential conflicts with their current clients. I knew there was no conflict with their other clients but let them do their own thing. A week later they hadn’t contacted me, so I called them again and asked them to get a hold of me ASAP. They didn’t contact me. So after waiting a week, I contacted a new law firm and got quick service and 24 hours later probate was underway.

I would not recommend Stonetree to any one.

Stay away from Jennifer Miller at all costs. She is lazy, slow to reply, and does not have the attention to detail one would expect in a lawyer. The rest of the office is professional enough but definitely not enough for me to recommend risking the run-around I received from her. Though from what I’ve seen in the other reviews, Jennifer is not the only money-grabbing, time-wasting lawyer in the office. Hopefully there is improvement in the future for other potential clients, but I can say I won’t be there to experience it.

I merely requested her to slow down, but she responded by saying she was busy and abruptly ended the call. This incident highlights a lack of effective communication and consideration in conveying one’s needs. It is ultimately your choice how you engage with clients, prospects, and inquiries, but I hope this feedback is taken constructively. FYI – I never asked to fill up forms, and being busy shouldn’t be the reason to show up unprofessional!
