We have been using Home Instead for 2 months now for my husband who is paralyzed. The company matched workers to fit in our home so we would be comfortable with them. We have a dog and home instead’s motto is it is your home and you should have a say on what you want and all the workers have loved our dog. Besides looking after my husband they help me out in the housework. Making the bed, cleaning the floors and bathroom. Do his laundry or any other tasks that there may be.
The workers are upbeat and cheery when they come in which helps set a person’s mood for the day. They are also very professional. It also gives me another woman that I can talk to providing companionship for myself which is really appreciated. Another plus is if you phone the Home Instead you get a live person answering the phone right away not a machine having you have to listen to. I highly recommend this company. They are very people orientated.

We used them 7 days a week for a few weeks upon my 101 year old father’s discharge from hospital into his independent living facility. We had heard about them from the LPNs and aides in the facility who recommended HI services. They were well organized, professional and caring, and always on time. Highly recommended.

We had Home Instead services for about 5 months this last winter. They were a great help to us. Words like kindness, empathy, humour, come to mind. They would also clean the place up, make the bed, unload the dishwasher, and vacuum, do laundry. The ladies are well trained to deal with dementia and were an overall comfort to have come over. Highly Recommended.

My elderly father and I used the Home Instead team to provide transportation to and from daily radiation appointments as well as accompanying and support during the appointment. Home Instead was the only support that I found who would provide ‘one time’ service. All of the other agencies required ongoing/continuous services.

I was overwhelmed with the care and attention that Home Instead provided. They were extremely flexible, as the daily appointments (5 days in a row) were at random times and changed randomly with less than 24 hours notice. They assured me that this was unusual for their service but they guaranteed that they could provide it and THEY DID! A couple of days, the caregiver and my father showed up for the appointment, and it was delayed, but the caregiver was not concerned with the extra time commitment required to complete the task.

All of the caregivers arrived at my father’s home with plenty of time to drive him to the appointment. They were very competent in all aspects of driving, finding parking, getting to the radiation center, staying and supporting him during the appointment and driving my father back home.

My father felt extremely comfortable with all the caregivers. We were both thrilled with the support that was provided during this difficult time. THANK YOU Home Instead!

Home Instead staff were so professional, kind, friendly, efficient, accommodating and flexible. Best decision we ever made was hiring them for their care professional service for my dad for companionship. After my mom’s passing, dad was feeling lost as his days and evenings were spent with her. It really helped him having the companionship in the late afternoon/early evenings especially Tracy and Christy, whom he had the most frequently.

I would highly recommend them.

Tracy and Christy both provided excellent care for my Dad last winter to provide my Mom with a break from caregiving for him. They both also did some housekeeping and Tracy cooked some delicious meals. My Dad is now in a care home but we would definitely consider Home Instead for future care needs. Thank you.

Highly recommend!

Above and beyond this thought, we have been truly blessed to have one particular staff as my grandmother primary caregiver from the very beginning. She demonstrates the excellent capacity to maintain a necessary level of professionalism while providing compassionate care for my grandmother and efficient oversight the management of the house. I live miles away from my grandmother and knowing that this staff is caring for her and that In-Need Home Care is there for us, has lifted much of the uncertainty and feelings of vulnerability that were so pervasive initially.
At this point, I cannot overly express my gratefulness for In-Need Home Care and your patient-centered focus.

I’m a military person and my time is dedicated to service and I’m very pleased with the recommendation I’d gotten from a friend to use this company to take care of my legal guardians who adopted me when I was young. Finding this company was one of the greatest gift I could give them in return for the busy schedule I have. Did my taxes there, and I had to make an appointment, or else I wasn’t getting seen, they are usually booked up for the time you have to do your taxes, so you want to do them early. You can drop your taxes off at the office room 205. If you don’t have an appointment, they will do them for you. It was fast. I just had to sign a sheet giving permission for them to go look in your file. Easy as pie. People who are on Aish can use this service to do taxes. This is a very helpful place.

I recently call to get assistance for my moms taxes and the volunteer who returned my call was rude and impatient when I asked her to repeat what she has previously said so quickly I did my get half of what she said. It didn’t sound like she liked her volunteer position very much. When I asked her name she said she is a volunteer and didn’t have to give her name. ???? Kirby has always been very helpful when assisting my mom, it was disappointing to speak to someone who maybe shouldn’t be representing the company

I had a bad experience at Unison at Kerby Center. The receptionist was unfriendly. When she knew I hoped to have Chinese service, she had no patience to listen to me. Few note you need to do to improve your services:

Stop charging $5 for all seniors to complete forms or other help.
Have a file for each client. You are so unorganized every single time when we are coming and asking for help.
My mom is an immigrant senior, first of all you don’t have a translator, I have to get a day off to be here and speaking on behalf of her, means I am losing money to support my mom.
And last not least, if your organization is there to help seniors from all over the world, please be fair enough to everyone, be prepared with different language barriers. Thanks

Horrid conditions. They lost the majority of Dad’s belongings. Most of the time when we visited he was wearing clothes that weren’t his. Poor training, and extremely questionable staff, many of whom I could not understand. Unfortunately, he passed away before we could move him to another facility. When that happened, the woman that called me had more than questionable language when she asked if I «Want to see the body» Tasteless. If you love your parents, find somewhere else.

My dad was a resident for a short amount of time (almost 2 months) until his passing. The care he received while here was outstanding – the staff was caring, respectful and compassionate, and they treated him dignity, even when he was difficult to manage. They took the time to get to know him and figure out the most effective way to meet his needs. He was treated as a person, and not as a patient. We watched as they treated other residents equally well – they weren’t just wonderful while someone was watching, but all the time. They also treated us as his family with great compassion and understanding, making a difficult time a little less difficult. Choosing this facility for dad to spend his final days was a very good decision.

The front line workers are wonderful-very compassionate. The upper echelon are the ones that need to rethink their stance. Their main aim is the bottom line and how much money they can make by cutting the services of the residents and employees. How can they cut services, and hours from employee and expect the residents to continue to have top care. It’s not happening since they reduced the hours of front line workers. I would remove my parent if their was another option – unfortunately this appears to be the status quo across LTC – SO SAD!!!!!

Had a chance to work here as a private companion. The locked down unit that we were in was not we had expected. Lots of shouting (patients mostly) but I understand it’s not their fault to be in that situation. Staff managed well most of the time. Staff are very approachable and very helpful. We got transfered to higher floor and i loved our stay! All of the people are smiling. You have to pay for parking as most establishments do. Met different kind of patients and staff and i must say, i am impressed.

This is a great place for the seniors of Bowness to hang out, socialize, get frisky, who knows what they do when it’s past 730p, you know!? But really though, these folks are some of the nicest people you’d ever meet. They have a great space that they’d surely rent to you, have awesome events and they even have a full commercial kitchen on-site for all of those delightful tea parties. Check them out, or better yet, make them a generous donation so they can start offering some coding and robotics classes alongside shuffleboard and ball room. There was only one choice when I was looking for a place for seniors in my life, and it was Trico Living Well. The entire team welcomed us with open arms, and continue to support my relatives with assisted living. The food is fantastic, and the choice of meals throughout the day is impressive. Once the staff got to know my family, their specific needs with respect to dietary requirements, low salt, low sugar etc. is automatically known. Every day there is an exercise class or two, and the events are varied. From live music, to movies on the big screen in the theater, to art classes, health and wellness, a puzzling area, and lots of places to sit down and relax and simply chat. The people at the front desk are welcoming, with big smiles. The nursing team is supportive and communicate regularly. The atmosphere is big, wide, and open. It feels like an elegant hotel, but with the personal touches of the staff that is very caring. Did I mention the food was great?! I often stop by there on purpose just to have lunch! And the wine selection is equally impressive.

«I could get used to this!» said my dad!

What an incredible community, run by a passionate, empathetic and kind-hearted team. The building and location itself is absolutely beautiful, with warm and inviting open-spaces and wonderfully diverse programming. I work specifically with the dementia community and it is incredible to see the support that Trico LivingWell has provided, not only by creating a wonderful community for those living with dementia, but also presenting the Alzheimer Calgary Walk & Run as the main sponsor. They truly invest into the community where it makes a real impact, and host additional fundraisers to help make an even bigger difference.

I have loved meeting each of them, Brandi, Kate, and the whole team – the food is incredible and curated for the residents, and they truly take care of every detail. I would highly recommend Trico LivingWell and it’s such a joy to work and interact with them!

We have been working with Trico Living Well for quite some time. It’s always a pleasure to work with Trico and the amazing and compassionate staff, like Brandi, who make the residence such a wonderful place to live! It’s been an absolute pleasure helping their residents move in. Every client is truly happy and delighted to be there!!

The staff is professional, patient and helpful! The facilities are new, bright and state of the art with the ambience of a boutique hotel! The common areas and activities provide for stimulating community and the residents are friendly and welcoming. Anyone considering becoming a resident or helping move a loved one to this beautiful location can do so with confidence and peace of mind. Thank you to the Team for helping my mom feel so at home. Cheers, Jeff

There are significant differences between the different facilities across Calgary and this review is not about the distinguishing features of Trico Living Well (that would be much too long of a review). My mother ultimately chose Trico (and I agreed with that choice).

My mother toured the Trico LivingWell facility twice over 10 months, then tried it out on a «Staycation» basis and is now a resident in her own suite.

So far, my mother’s experience with Trico has been very good. One of the key factors in choosing to live in such a facility is the people who work there.

Brandi Young (leasing consultant) was the point of contact for both tours (in January and fall 2024) – great tour guide. Brandi seemed full of patience. Even given the repetition of having to give 100s of tours and sit down meetings with people interested in the facility, Brandi’s approach was filled with patience and she seemed unphased by having to answer the same questions over and over. Brandi has also been a focal point of contact for questions and concerns after the move in and has been invaluable in navigating the facility. This was somewhat surprising to me – because I assumed that once the leasing process was done, my Mother would be passed on to a different employee at Trico as her «go to» person for ongoing questions and concerns. I can see now that having a consistent point of contact like Brandi (from the initial tours, leasing process and then as a tenant) makes things easier for tenants. If Brandi ever moves on to other opportunities in the future, I think that will be a big disappointment for residents at Trico.

Many other people work at Trico. I have had limited (or no) contact with most of them but my mother tells me about them. Whenever I visit, the receptionists have been helpful with parking. The onboarding process with Trico’s RN and LPN was thorough (but a little tiring for my mother given how long going through all of the necessary questions take). The health staff have been responsive when my mother has had a few issues requiring her to call them. My mother also appreciates that Trico has arranged for local GPs to provide «on site» doctor appointments for residents. My mother has been very complimentary of the staff who clean her suite weekly. My mother also appreciates the people working in the art activity programs.

My mother has says ALL of the staff are good at learning the names of the residents (pretty impressive given that there are 200+ residents).

Probably, the most important service for most of the Trico residents is the meal service. My mother knows the servers who staff the shifts and is pleased with the efforts they make. On balance, I would say that my mother has been O.K. with the meal services at Trico. As expected, individual menu items get a mix of good and bad reviews. My mother does complain about some dishes being served too cold and hears that some facilities address this by placing plates under covers to keep them warm until actually placed on the table. She enjoys the daily soup offerings but does complain that soup isn’t always served first. Staffing problems (i.e. employee absences which every employer has to contend with) sometimes cause service to get slow – but it sounds like those problems are not frequent. My understanding is that Trico has a wider range of dining room hours over which meals are offered (i.e. not set meal sittings or narrow time bands like some other facilities). This is a selling point but might have some tradeoffs – like slower service if too many residents show up at the same time and overwhelm the available dining staff. So maybe some room for improvement?

Trico could improve is their monthly billing documents. I have a university accounting degree and I find it difficult to navigate all of the offsetting debit and credit entries that are put into different parts of the bill. My mother has relayed that she has heard other residents also complain about this.

That’s it… overall (even with some criticisms) – 5 stars.

I moved into assisted living at Trico after exploring other options in July. The move went incredibly well with movers recommended by Trico. The new building is great and it represents good value. The dining experience is excellent. 3 meals with choice as to when to eat, what to eat, and where you wish to sit. The Trico team is very knowledgeable, professional and foster a caring community. Brandi, the sales manager, was attentive to understanding my needs. Trico Living Well is home.

Six months ago we began the process to find Caregivers for our mother who is 92 years old, suffering from the challenges that come at this point in life. Our goal was to find consistent compassionate and qualified Caregivers that would not only care for our mother but also provide the family with peace of mind and life balance. The decision not only to proceed in this direction but to find the right company was daunting. After meeting with Melissa from Senior Homecare by Angels, we knew this was a company that we could trust and rely on to meet our needs. From start to finish the process went very quickly and efficiently which further addressed the need for timely help.
All of the coordinators at Senior Homecare by Angels have been great. From the start, Melissa has been our primary contact/corrdinator and she has been absolutely outstanding. By listening and understanding our mother’s needs, she made great matches with Caregivers Meagan and Ann. Melissa is always friendly, understanding and professional. She has always been able to quickly address any requests for scheduling changes whether it is due to changes in our mother’s health or additional time required for family. We are extremely grateful for both Melissa and Gerry’s support and flexibility, who are always there when we need them.

Mom’s Caregivers, Meagan and Ann, are the most compassionate, patient and caring people one could ever hope to welcome into our home. They connect with our mom in such a special way that gives the entire family a lot of comfort. Both are self starters ensuring that Mom’s needs are met and seek out extra work around the house. They are trust worthy and communicate very well with all of us. Not only do they keep current with Mom’s care needs ( emotionally and physically) they are always punctual and truly dedicated with strong work ethics.
Our experience with Senior Homecare by Angels has enabled us to keep Mom in our home with the safety and confidence needed for her well being. We are blessed to have their support and would highly recommend Senior Homecare by Angels.

We have had the privilege of working with HCBA for over a year, and they have been a tremendous help to our family during a challenging time. They assisted my parents with aging in place and, more recently, have supported us through the transition after my mother’s passing, as well as with my father’s move into a senior health care facility.

From the beginning, the HCBA team has been responsive, kind, caring, and truly helpful at every step. Celina, in particular, has been wonderful, and every individual who has worked with my parents has been equally great. The team’s professionalism and compassion have made an incredibly difficult time easier to navigate. I am deeply grateful for their support and highly recommend their services, and have done so for my friends parents.

Our family has been using the services of Senior Home Care by Angels for our 95 year old Mom for almost ten months now (8 hrs overnight 7 days/week).

Gerry, the owner/director, and his team, Darlene & Laurie, have (from day one) ALWAYS addressed our needs & concerns very promptly & professionally, both by phone & email. They are all very genuine & caring, easy to talk to, and respectful of Mom’s & our needs at all times.

Our Mom is very fond of her two current «Angels», Seble & Shiela. Our family appreciates the overnight respite & peace of mind, knowing & trusting that Mom is happy, safe, & cared for.

Senior Home Care by Angels has exceeded our expectations and we certainly recommend this company for anyone needing homecare for an elderly loved one.
Thank you for everything, Angels!

I started using Angels Senior Health Care some weeks ago when my wife died
They are 100%% wonderful. I have a marvelous carer called Linda who does everything for me in the house and drives me out.to shop and to medical appointments.
The senior staff, Gerry, Laurie Darlene keep in regular touch to see how I am and what I might need/
I cannot praise Angels enough, feel very lucky to be with them, and would most strongly recommend them to anyone needing Senior Home Care Service
Should also emphasize that they are also supplying much-needed emotional support in this time of bereavement and grief

We have been using the services of Senior Home Care by Angels for over 6 months now to come and provide companionship to my mom who has Alzheimer’s. They have been amazing in finding the right fit for my mom in the caregiver we have. They are open to feedback and do all they can to try and make sure it is a situation that is healthy, happy and helpful to all involved. The peace of mind that we have gotten from this service has been such a relief. To have another person available to take my mom for outings or groceries and to just be there to visit and make sure all is okay, has allowed me to relax a little and know that she is being taken care of. I would highly recommend this company to provide care and companionship for your loved ones.

Cambridge is amazing. The entire team from the director (who actually physically helped us to move my mom in) to the caregivers are attentive and compassionate. Unfortunately, my mom got there too late, and by the time she received adequate care, she only had weeks left to live. I do find solace in knowing she was with a caring person who made all attempts to help her through the crisis.

My mother was at Bethany (check out that review) before we were able to move her Cambridge. After months of being gaslit and abused at Bethany, Cambridge was a breath of fresh air. They surpassed every single expectation we had for a facility caring for our incredibly special person.

6 months after my mother’s passing, Cambridge invited us to a butterfly release with all the families that had lost a loved one that year. I found this to be extremely therapeutic. They named every single person and once again demonstrated their humanity. I have been grateful every single day since my mom died that this was where she met her end. She was surrounded by people who treated her with dignity, respect, compassion, and kindness.

Thank you, Cambridge Manor.

I got an opportunity to visit the BSF Cambridge Manor yesterday with my baby and able to watch the Christmas concert. It amazes me because i have seen all the Nurses,Doctor’s, Clerk, Reception,Housekeeping, Dietary, OT, Recreation Team, Managers , Maintenance, HCA’s and their family members that volunteer to put up and present a unique Christmas concert. It is truly that people collaborate and bring their unique strengths, ideas, and perspectives together, they can create something much greater than what any individual could achieve alone. Teamwork often leads to innovation and the ability to tackle challenges more effectively. The power of collaboration and Team effort. Being able to show compassion and also by spreading happiness and the true spirit of Christmas to all the residents and their families is truly remarkable. I am so proud and offer a round of applause to them for this wonderful effort.»

Bless the hearts and souls of people who live here or involved with BSF.

Because The foundation needs to do an internal review of their EA and the level of absolutely Zero communication or ability to answer questions. It’s literally her job. I would be more than happy to provide context and proof.

It would seem literally anyone is an inconvenience to her. Or doing her job in general is an inconvenience to herself.

She might even do one action towards your inquiry aka PRESS forward – and send it to someone else – because why would she help you (it’s not like she works there or something) good lord.

Even if she does that action she never responds to say the inquiry was received or forwarded or when asked to be advised doesn’t guide you in any process or contact information. And if you ask if you should follow up to who she passed it along to she also will not respond.

This is extremely concerning. Could you imagine dealing in regards to an elderly loved one?? Wild. My heart goes out to anyone having to deal with the EA at BSF for all locations.

She seems extremely miserable in her position and a problem in completing daily tasks that are an apart of her roll. Or communicating in general.

I can’t imagine asking her to do it with kindness and compassion if she cannot even provide basic answers to extremely basic questions.

Great experience with great people. I have been visiting almost daily my mother with dementia for a few months now at Cambridge manor and from the visitation coordinator, the amazing friendly front desk staff, kind and organized Covid screening coordinator and the absolutely amazing nurses and support staff in Stilton. It’s not easy seeing a loved one go through these days but I am thankful for all the staff at this facility that make it a positive and supportive environment. They have treated my mother with absolute kindness and are very skilled in this kind of care. Thank you all for what you do daily to provide support at these very emotionally challenging times.

My 85yr old mom who has Parkinson’s has been at the Cambridge Manor for a year as of July 2020, shortly after they opened, right in the middle of the pandemic.

Since then, i can honestly say, her overall health has improved remarkably. She has put on some much needed weight & she is more mobile due to the physio and activity programs she has been participating in ‘inhouse’ as well as the extra Physio from a private company, that Cambridge recommended to us.

As with any new facility opening, we expected that there would be a period of challenges with the many different aspects of running a residence of this nature.

After speaking with the right people regarding these matters there has been a marked improvement -each time I bring up a concern I am heard and feel and see that there is a conscious effort made to continue improving.

The nursing staff have been very attentive to my mom. They are very kind and cheerful and sincerely try to ensure my mom is made comfortable throughout the day and night. Weldu & Alyssa have been really wonderful!

I have expressed concern over the response times when the call bell is rung. I feel more staff is required to accommodate the number of residents. I am told they have hired one more staff person to help improve response times. I am hopeful that they will bring on more staff to accommodate the additional number of residents that are moving in.

I am so grateful that we have Dr Jed as the Dr assigned to Cambridge. He has been very thorough and is very kind and caring. My mom really likes him as well.

The cleaning staff do a great job at daily sanitizing my mom’s room -they too always have a kind word to say.

The recreation team have also been working so hard to come up with fun, innovative ways to keep the residents entertained and busy-an especially difficult task during the lockdowns. As restrictions are lifted we are seeing a marked difference in the type of activities-looking forward to seeing more!

My experiences with all the staff at the front desk since the beginning has been exceptionally kind and helpful.

We will always be grateful for the kindness, quality of care and friendship
that my husband Joe received while he was a resident in the Stilton Unit at Cambridge Manor. As his health deteriorated in the final months we realized that he felt surrounded by a caring team and what a blessing and comfort that was.

We found the gals at the front reception were always welcoming and helpful. Cambridge Manor is very fortunate to have Dr. Jed and so many caring and thoughtful staff working for them and it was our good fortune that Joe was able to reside at Cambridge Manor.

Front desk staff are hostile and rude. To the older lady with short white hair and the lady with the scarf; There is no reason to lock the door and aggressively interrogate people when they are simply visiting their loved ones. If you do not wish to be helpful then that is okay; however a nasty and belligerent attitude makes everyone feel poorly.

The older lady running the desk is clearly not happy with her job , she rolls her eyes or uses a tone when she doesn’t want to fulfill a simple request, she made my mom and residence feel very uncomfortable and apparently the home is aware of her behavior but has not removed her from her position, this is unacceptable and the company needs to act now

Frequently Asked Questions about Elderly Day Centers in Calgary

What exactly is an elderly day center?

An elderly day center, also often referred to as an adult day program, is a supervised setting offering care and support services for seniors who need assistance with daily activities but don’t require 24-hour residential care. These centers provide a safe and social environment for seniors to engage in activities, receive personal care, and benefit from stimulation and companionship.

Who typically uses elderly day centers?

Elderly day centers serve a diverse group of seniors. They are often utilized by individuals experiencing cognitive decline due to conditions like Alzheimer's disease or dementia, those needing assistance with physical limitations or mobility issues, or those facing social isolation. They can also be beneficial for seniors recovering from illness or surgery.

What types of activities are offered at Calgary's elderly day centers?

The activities offered vary between centers, but commonly include exercise programs, arts and crafts, music therapy, games and puzzles, group outings, and educational workshops. The goal is to provide both physical and mental stimulation, as well as opportunities for social interaction.

How much do elderly day centers in Calgary typically cost?

The cost of elderly day centers varies depending on the center, the length of the program, and the level of care needed. Generally, expect to pay somewhere between $30 to $75 per day, though this is a broad estimate. Financial assistance options, such as subsidies or grants, may be available for eligible seniors.

Are elderly day centers suitable for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s?

Many elderly day centers are equipped to support seniors with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. They often have specialized staff trained in memory care techniques and a secure environment designed to minimize wandering and promote calmness and safety. However, it is essential to verify the center’s specific capabilities and experience with dementia care.

How do I find a reputable elderly day center in Calgary?

Several resources can help you find a reputable elderly day center in Calgary. Start by contacting Alberta Health Services for a list of licensed providers. Check online directories and read reviews from other families. Also, it's beneficial to schedule visits to potential centers and speak with the staff.

What qualifications and licensing should I look for in an elderly day center?

Ensure the center is properly licensed and regulated by Alberta Health Services. Look for staff with appropriate qualifications and training, including certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and registered nurses (RNs). A good center will prioritize staff-to-client ratios to ensure individualized attention and quality care. Accreditation by relevant organizations can also be a positive indicator.

What are the benefits of elderly day centers for caregivers?

Elderly day centers offer invaluable respite and support for caregivers. They provide a much-needed break from the daily demands of caregiving, allowing caregivers to attend to their own physical and emotional well-being. This can prevent caregiver burnout and improve overall family dynamics.

Can my family member try out a day center before committing to a full program?

Most elderly day centers understand the importance of a trial period. They typically offer short-term or respite care options that allow your family member to experience the program firsthand. This "trial run" gives everyone a chance to assess the fit and determine if the center meets their needs.

What should I consider when choosing an elderly day center for my loved one?

Beyond cost and location, consider your loved one’s specific needs and interests. Observe the atmosphere and staff interaction during a visit. Inquire about the center’s emergency procedures and communication policies. Most importantly, ensure the center feels like a welcoming and supportive environment for your family member.
