First, the facility (Alberta Counselling Centre) was open on Sunday if you book an appointment. This is greatly appreciated and rare. This alleviates traffic, parking and crowds. Upon arrival, the building was easy to find and I had no issues with parking. The office was well appointed with a cozy waiting area. Clare was prompt and my appointment started on time. At the beginning, I was offered water and I saw another person with tea. This was a nice touch. The appointment was beneficial and Clare developed a rapport quickly, which was important. The appointment ended on time, which was respectful of the next person. The experience was very positive and I would highly recommend Alberta Counselling Centre.

Derek has been invaluable for my child's experience of playing AA hockey as a goalie. He is someone that my child can talk to about the mental struggles of this position. Teens don't always want to be vulnerable when talking to their parents, so having someone that my child can trust and openly talk with has been an asset. Knowing that Derek has worked with high level athletes gives us the confidence that his skills will benefit our child too. Being able to book virtual appointments during a busy hockey and school schedule is an excellent service from Virtuous Circle Counselling.

In regards to actual counsellers I can’t say much, but we just had the most belittling and condescending experience with reception. They had charged the wrong credit card over the course of a number of visits and when we called and asked them to refund and charge the other card on file, there was a huge concern about the fact that it was my husbands mothers card. At no point was I asked for consent to use the card upon booking, or when I initially gave them the information, but when we told them of their error and asked for the money to be charged appropriately we were met with comments like "well why are you using your moms credit card?" Or when we mentioned that we were now out that money personally and couldn’t afford it, and that’s why his mother was paying to begin with, the comments we received were "well you’re not out the money you received a service" and "don’t you have benefits to reimburse you?" All the comments but anything you’d consider helpful or positive. It was disgusting and belittling and for a place that’s focused on bettering mental health and supporting people it was such a horrible experience. If they need consent I understand but why wasn’t that requested when we put the card on file? Upon offering to send us an email that we could forward on to his mother asking for consent to use the card and us accepting the staff member continued to talk about how much money it was and why were needing to use his moms credit card and she just couldn’t understand why we would need to do that. After repeatedly asking her to just send the email she continued to talk over us and then hung up. His mother is in Australia for a month and contacting her is not as easy as a phone call. All around a horrendous experience and left us both feeling terrible about needing help paying for these services.

We met with Simren to do our child psychological testing. She was very professional and organized in the initial conversations and so sweet with our children. She was very welcoming and made them feel comfortable through the process. I loved that she called me that night with results so we didn’t have to wait. She then met with us again with the detailed report to go through it with us. I would recommend her to anyone looking to do assessments for school or any other reason. Thank you Simren for being so great to my family.

We found Stride on Google and approached Simren for our child’s assessment for Westmount. Our son got along with Simren from the get go. Simren’s approach towards our son, brought out the best in him during his assessment. All one could ask for is one’s child to perform to his best on the day of his assesment. Needless to say we are elated with our son’s results.
I would recommend Simren and her team at Stride, to any parent that wants to get their child assessed for giftedness. Also, their feed back meeting is very thorough and detailed, which really shows their passion for their field of work!

Thank You Stride!

We had Simren’s help in assessing both our daughters’ IQ for school. She was amazing with the kids and helped both girls feel comfortable. Simren was mindful of timelines and communicated in a timely fashion. She was able to do most of the work with us virtually (except the assessment, which needed to be in person of course), and we appreciated this flexibility.

From the first phone call, I felt supported. The admin staff were kind and quick to respond, and getting booked in with the right therapist was simple and stress-free. What stood out most to me was how welcoming and non-judgmental the whole experience felt.

My therapist really took the time to understand what I was going through and worked with me at my pace. It didn’t feel clinical or rushed—it felt real. I appreciated the mix of compassion and practical tools that actually helped me feel better and more in control.

I also loved that they offer both in-person and online sessions, which made things easier when life got busy. If you’re thinking about starting therapy, I can’t say this enough: Your Counselling is a safe, professional, and genuinely caring place.

I’ve been using Your Counselling for online PTSD therapy, and it’s been a really positive experience. The therapist I have been working with is kind, professional, and really understands trauma. I have felt safe and supported from the first session.

What I really like is the flexibility, being able to have sessions from anywhere made it easier to stay consistent, and everything still felt private and secure.

My therapist has given me many practical tools for my mental, and physical ‘tool box’ that help me manage anxiety and triggers in everyday life.

I’m feeling more stable and confident than I have in a long time. If you’re struggling with PTSD or trauma, I’d definitely recommend giving Your Counselling a try. It’s made a big difference for me.

I was absolutely blown away by my first session!!! I cannot say enough good things about the quality of care I received at this facility. My therapist Natalie was absolutely amazing!!!! I have seen a few counsellors in the past and no one has ever been able to connect and advise me as well as she did. Not only was she very engaging but she really understood how to effectively communicate and get me to express how I was feeling and actually come up with a treatment plan to work through together!!! I would HIGHLY recommend this facility to anyone!! I know that whether you see Natalie or another therapist you will be in good hands as everyone here seems to be hand selected with their own unique specialty and area of expertise…I can say without hesitation that I am now a patient for life!! Thank you for all your help!!!

This place is a God send !!

Sheryl is absolutely incredible !! She’s a kind, compassionate and caring human, :).

Therapy always seemed like something scary but with Sheryl it’s been such a wonderful experience.

The aura of this facility is so warm and inviting. The rooms are cozy and comfortable.

And you get to see the beautiful, smiling receptionist each visit and she makes it that much better and more welcoming, :).

I’m so thankful I found this place and Sheryl. I don’t know where I would be without her, :).

In a city like Calgary, it can be overwhelming to know which practitioner or agency to choose from when you need help, and the last thing you need is a mini research project to compare and contrast, especially when in a time of crisis.

Let me save you time and offer my full endorsement of the Calgary Institute of Counselling, as a client.

I drive across the city specifically because of the professional and highly personalized care I receive. Their online scheduling and payment system is very user friendly, and in a city like this, having free, accessible parking is also a big deal.

Thanks to the CIC’s team of trained, and accredited professionals, I can show up for myself, my marriage, family and career with the best possible wrap around support.

Because of the positive results, I now book sessions ahead of time, and take a similar approach to maintaining my mental health and wellness no different than scheduling regular physical check ups with my Dr., oil changes at the local shop or bank appointments with a financial advisor. There’s no need to wait until the red lights come on, to ask for help.

But don’t take my word for it, book an appointment and see for yourself. It’ll be the best investment in yourself you’ve likely made in a long time.

I can’t say enough about this place. I own a business, and just happened to know the owner. One of my staff was struggling so I recommended she go there. She loved it. Fast forward two months later and my stress level is at an all-time high. I had so much on my plate and was feeling like I was on an island. I called and was immediately paired with the right person. Counseling IS for everyone!
I wouldn’t be where I am now or feeling as good about it if I hadnt called. If you’re looking for the right place with people who are down to eartho and really truly get it. Book now!!

I had terrible sleep and anxiety for a while (related to my chronic health issues, thanks to old age), and the team at Be Well provided friendly and professional service to address my underlying problems. Specifically, Alya was warm, kind, and empathetic. She demonstrated great understanding and helped me cope with the symptoms I was having in a positive way, helping me see the situation from another side and deal with the anxious feelings head-on. I would recommend anyone seek counseling and support with her, especially if they are elderly or have physical limitations which impact their psychological state. Thanks again.

Great resource for people needing counseling. The counselors I have experienced over the years were great. It has definitely helped me in the past and I plan on using their services again to help me. The only negative comment I have is sliding scale initial fee estimate can be quite high..but they will adjust if you request. I had to rebook my initial appointment a few times all with adequate notice due to sudden work schedule changes etc, I was given a ride attitude from my counselor who asked if I was committed to change and ready for counseling. That was off putting and unnecessary..which made me want to switch counselors since then things have been better. It all depends who you get for a counselor if they suck or are not helpful just request to be reassigned.

I had high hopes for Calgary Counselling Centre, but the experience was a complete disappointment. Their process is outdated, and instead of real, personalized guidance, they just send you YouTube videos—as if I couldn’t find the same information myself for free. For $250 per session, I expected actual support, not generic online resources.

On top of that, the therapists themselves seem like they need therapy. They don’t listen properly, don’t offer meaningful solutions, and seem disengaged from actually helping clients. It’s frustrating to pay so much for a service that feels cold and ineffective.

If they want to improve, they need to:

Offer real, tailored support instead of relying on online videos.

Train their therapists better so they actually engage and provide value.

Justify their high fees with effective sessions rather than outdated methods.

At this point, it feels like a cash grab rather than a place for real healing. Save your money and find somewhere that truly cares! #truth

Don’t get the bad reviews my therapist is super professional, listens and is engaged, non judgemental, offered real support that has completely shifted my relationship with anxiety and offered valuable insights on what’s going on with my thought patterns and why I’m having certain feelings.

Intake took a couple weeks after filling the online form out, it does take a second so just be patient but they do eventually call.

People talking about the questionnaire are being a bit dramatic, it takes about 2-4 minutes, and it’s so they can see a chart of your emotions and how they are changing overtime, I think since it’s a sliding scale they use this to determine if you may need more sessions or not, but I’ve been under «baseline» for what’s «appropriate» and they still keep booking me sessions and letting me work with them. But yeah it’s really not bad, you do one anytime 24-48 hours before your session, and one after while in the room with therapist (rate your session so if something is off your therapist will work with you to see why).

I’ve tried other resources like better help and online therapy and this was completely different, felt like a doctor but for your emotions, and with the sliding scale and being out in Airdrie I pay incredibly less per session.

I had a very disappointing experience with Calgary Counselling Centre. After being referred by my doctor, psychiatrist, and the hospital, I went in genuinely seeking help. During my intake appointment with Sharona Pilmeister, I was open and honest about my mental health struggles. She told me she would follow up with my family doctor, Dr. Todd Peterson.

Later, I received an email from Denis Sushkin saying that, based on a professional discussion with my psychiatrist, I would not be offered further counselling. But Dr. Todd Peterson is my family doctor, not my psychiatrist — which makes the communication feel careless and unprofessional. If a discussion did take place, how did they get such a basic fact wrong?

I felt like I was stigmatized and discriminated against for being honest about my mental health. It’s frustrating and disheartening to be turned away when I was genuinely trying to seek help. I also couldn’t help but feel that I was at more of a disadvantage because I am a person of color and a male — which only added to the sense of exclusion.

I also couldn’t help but feel that financial motives were at play — as if I had been pushed aside to prioritize clients who could bring in more revenue.

Now I see why this place gets reviews of 1 star or less. It’s impossible to get a hold of a live person for asking questions. Intake line only. Totally automated answering that goes to voicemail. I tried calling multiple times.
If your mental health is at stake don’t choose this place. My first impression is that this place is so cheap and money oriented that it won’t even pay a secretary to answer the phone. I would hate to see how they would handle my mental with their kind of service.

I’ve been receiving counselling here since 2020 and every therapist I’ve had with has been incredibly supportive, an excellent listener, and genuinely compassionate. Battling my ADHD has been a long journey, with frequent relapses into depression, they’ve always helped me get back on my feet. They consistently validate my feelings and struggles, making me feel truly understood and cared for. Karina Bruce was my previous therapist and I truly love and appreciate her so much. I definitely recommend her if you are ever looking for a therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions about Psychologists in Calgary

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

It's common to be unsure of the distinction. A psychologist focuses on behavioral therapy and mental health assessment. They have a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and can diagnose and treat mental health conditions but typically do not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist, on the other hand, is a medical doctor (MD) who can prescribe medication and often integrates medication management with psychotherapy. Understanding this difference is crucial for choosing the right professional for your needs. They may also have different approaches to treatment.

What types of issues do psychologists in Calgary typically address?

Psychologists in Calgary address a broad range of mental health concerns, including anxiety disorders, depression, stress management, trauma, relationship issues, grief and loss, and addictions. They may also work with individuals experiencing learning disabilities or behavioral challenges. The specific areas of expertise can vary greatly among different psychologists.

How do I find a registered psychologist in Calgary?

To ensure you are working with a qualified professional, it's important to find a registered psychologist. You can use the College of Alberta Psychologists website to verify registration and find a psychologist in your area. The website provides a directory of registered psychologists, their areas of expertise, and contact information. Always confirm registration before scheduling an appointment. A registered psychologist adheres to a code of ethics.

What is the process for scheduling an initial consultation with a psychologist?

The process usually begins with contacting the psychologist's office by phone or email. Many psychologists offer a brief phone consultation to discuss your needs and determine if they are a good fit. During the initial appointment, you’ll typically discuss your concerns, goals for therapy, and the psychologist’s approach. Be prepared to provide details about your current situation and what you hope to achieve. It is also a good opportunity to ask about fees and insurance coverage.

What can I expect from my first few therapy sessions?

The first few sessions are primarily focused on assessment and rapport-building. The psychologist will ask detailed questions about your history, current circumstances, and goals for therapy. They’re also helping you feel comfortable and establish a trusting relationship. It’s important to be open and honest, even if it’s difficult. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the psychologist's approach or anything else that concerns you. Creating a safe therapeutic environment is vital.

Do psychologists in Calgary offer online therapy?

Many psychologists in Calgary now offer online therapy or telehealth services, especially since recent changes. This can be a convenient option for individuals who have difficulty accessing in-person therapy due to geographic limitations, mobility issues, or scheduling conflicts. Ensure the psychologist is using a secure and confidential online platform that complies with privacy regulations. Verify that the psychologist is appropriately licensed and qualified to provide online mental health services.

How long does therapy typically last?

The duration of therapy varies greatly depending on the nature of the issue, the individual’s goals, and the psychologist’s approach. Some individuals may benefit from a few sessions for specific issues, while others may require longer-term therapy spanning several months or even years. It's important to discuss timelines and expectations with the psychologist during the initial consultation. The therapy process is often iterative.

What are the ethical considerations for psychologists?

Psychologists are bound by a strict code of ethics to ensure the well-being and confidentiality of their clients. This includes maintaining client confidentiality, obtaining informed consent, avoiding conflicts of interest, and providing competent services. If you have concerns about a psychologist’s ethical conduct, you can report it to the College of Alberta Psychologists. Professional boundaries are essential for a healthy therapeutic relationship.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a counseling therapist?

While both professions deal with mental health, there are distinctions. Counseling therapists typically focus on shorter-term, solution-focused interventions, often addressing specific life challenges or immediate concerns. Psychologists, with their doctoral training, often conduct in-depth assessments and may explore deeper underlying issues. Some overlap exists, and both can be beneficial depending on the nature of your needs. It’s important to understand their educational background and scope of practice.

How are psychologists regulated in Alberta?

Psychologists in Alberta are regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists, a self-regulatory body. The College ensures that psychologists meet specific educational and training requirements, adhere to a code of ethics, and maintain competency. They investigate complaints and take disciplinary action when necessary. This regulation helps protect the public and ensures the provision of quality mental health services.
